40 Cron Street Franz Josef, Westland National Park, South Island, New Zealand, 2000, 64-3-752-0001
We have been anticipating getting to Glacier Country for a while now and after our 5 hour or so drive (with plenty of photo ops along the way), we finally made it.
Along the way, Gillian and I met plenty of travelers and a tour bus driver who insisted that we could not pass up the heli-hike on Fox Glacier. So, when we arrived yesterday, the first stop we made was to the Fox Glacier guiding company to put ourselves on the list for a heli-hike the next day. We did get some disappointing ...
Tiny, one street township nestled by the fox and franz josef glaciers. Pouring when I got there and sunny when I went glacier hiking before driving to Queenstown through the most spectacular areas. That drive was one of the highlights of my trip.

... the respective rooms.Well each room I opened had people in the rooms! The first one was a 2 bed dorm with a girl in each bed. The second had one queen-sized bed with an old couple in it. Each time I opened a door, someone woke up and stared at me in surprise. Josh and I found an after hours number on the gate, which we called over and over. The nice YHA lady on the line kept trying different numbers for us, but couldn’t reach anyone. So once again, we went into the common room ...

Franz Josef, South Island, New Zealand ctompkins11We left Makarora and made our way up the coast stopping for Breakfast in Haast. A two hour drive later and we arrived in Fox Glacier the first of the large Glaciers. We walked around the bottom and took a couple of pictures then I realised I left my coat in Haast - doh! We finished looking around the giant ice mountain before driving back to Haast to pick up my coat. We then stopped for lunch back in Haast for monkfish & chips ...
Franz Josef, South Island, New Zealand pixelchickWe had booked a heli hike on Franz Josef glacier for the afternoon but due to rain it was cancelled so we just ****** about for the day. We drove over to see the glacier and seriously what a dissapointment it was in comparison to Perito Moreno in Argentina but we were told that by people we met in S.America who had seen the two. Ror jogged back from glacier while I drove the car - first time they let me behind the wheel! We ate in the local pub ...

Franz Josef, South Island, New Zealand hadwin... down to the Fox Glacier. Unfortunately it was a bit misty so we abandoned our plan to hike to a view point and instead went to Lake Matheson. We walked around the edge of the lake to a point where we could see Mount Cook in the distance. We then drove to Gillespie's beach to see the driftwood, which was loads of dead trees scattered all over the beach. By now it was raining heavily (the West Coast apparently has 200 days of rain a year) so we headed north.
Franz Josef, South Island, New Zealand angela_louise... our support. The last week has been amazing. I don't want to sound corny or fond of a cliche - but I'm having the time of my life. The last few entries have been a bit rushed and so hopefully the pics are entertaining even if the blog itself is a bit dull. Blame it all on New Zealand - I can't take myself away from it long enough to have to make it sound I'm having a ball - I just am. On my iPod Ice Ice Baby - Vanilla Ice
Franz Josef, South Island, New Zealand codownsean... came sliding down and 2) I now had time for a quick drive to the beach (20km down the road), where I could view the glaciers from the ocean (again, a very odd sight) before heading to catch my helicopter flight up to hike Franz Josef. Navigating a very windy and unpaved road, I made it to the beach just in time to snap a few photos and then head back towards Fox Glacier and onto Franz Josef.

Seeing the glacier from the air in a low ...
Franz Josef, South Island, New Zealand texaspeyton... Franz Josefisse jätkata bussiga, sest autorentimisevõimalused pole seal just suured.
