Back in Bali - an apology to my mother

... re so dramatic and over-acted, and have really cheap stage sets. It’s funny to watch – for 5 minutes!

It was also entertaining to watch the ads – and local game shows. The programs are so glitzy. The people in the ads are immaculately dressed with glossy hair; the homes are modern show homes, the bathrooms pristine white, and the grass outside is lush and green. But where are these people and homes? Where does this kind ...

Making friends already!

... wear a stretchy and very tight corset-type waistband to hold up the sarong - and I had to do some serious sucking in of breath to get it around me! Finally we crossed the road to the bride's parent's house/compound where the ceremony was to be held. Or had been held, as it turns out! (You never really get the full picture here, but it turns out I was invited to the bit between the wedding ceremony and the main reception where there were lots of people sitting around ...

Day 227-241 Legian, Bali, Indonesian

... br> Our final day trip was on the Bali Fun ship to Nusa Lembongan Island. Mum began the day in many photos looking happy and excited but after being on the boat not more than 30mins later she began to feel seriously sea sick and nauseous. We were not sure if it was a combination of sea-sickness and a migraine, but either way it rendered her prone on the couch of the boat the rest of the journey.

It was difficult to enjoy the day knowing how terrible she was feeling ...

for gods sake, put that thing away while im eating

... mental calculator to go into overdrive. On the price side of things......it is about the same as Thailand but this is the tourist hot spot which means it should get quite a bit cheaper as I head out into the boonies to check out all the volcanoes. Well I'm off to ubud (oobood) for a little less craziness and more artsyness so although I didn't particularly enjoy kuta, it has been a different experience for sure. Ok I'm outtie and back on the road, cya.

Where the world shops!

... there was another ornate Buddhist temple. We stopped and took a lot of pictures as we walked. After trudging along for at least a half an hour, we finally reached the shopping street we were looking for. And within a short time, we found "the necklace." The difference was that here there were at least 10 different designs to choose from, and I could buy 6 for less than the price of one in New Zealand! It was definitely worth waiting! We ...

Buckets of Bintang in Bonkers but Beautiful Bali

... every property for the same reason. After lunch in a restaurant overlooking Gunung Batukau (Bali's second highest mountain) and its picturesque neighbouring lake, we moved on to a springwater Temple, taking a look at a traditional rice terrace along the way. At the Temple it is very disrespectful to have uncovered legs so men and women alike have to wear a sarong over their shorts. The Temple, open to visitors in between six-monthly ceremonies is a beautiful place with ...

Poor, poor, sick Ian!!

Hullo, Bare with me if this message is slightly garbled but am still suffering from some of the symptoms I am about to relate. On the Friday following the disastrous adventure involving Mr. Ketut and Mr. Ketut, I was feeling a little bit tired and stressed, but was totally unprepared for what was to follow. My temperature kept rising throughout the weekend and between sweating my own body weight and the fever breaking on Sunday I had developed ...

Island of the Gods

... more than ready to soak in the sun, sea and colorful tropical fishes with the rest of my traveling buddies. True to its description, Bali is filled with temples or Pura where the local Hindus worship the gods. I'm sure there are more amazing spiritual sites than the four I've managed to sneak into the short 4 days I was there. Being at Pura Tanah Lot and Pura Uluwatu, strategically situation at the ...

Brahmin Priests and Medicine Men

... with only his hands. The Baliyan returned and asked me what my problem was. I explained how sometimes I was indecisive, confused, or even depressed. He left us for a moment, wandering his garden in search of medicine, or perhaps meditating so he would know what to do for me. Upon returning, he pressed (********* a number of places on my head. Finding a sore spot, he chuckled and reported that I had a lot of blocked emotion. "Cough!" he instructed, and I did; maybe ...
