Wayne & Karena gave us the best surprise by taking us to Bunker Bay in Maragret River for a the afternoon and staying over in a beautiful resort where we all had lots of fun and drank too much wine! The next morning we had a slap up breaky as required ;0)
The resort was lots of villas right next to a beautiful bay which we went walking …
We left Fremantle and headed south. It was an easy drive but we were disappointed that from the coast road you can't see the coast without turning off! The Great Ocean Road in Victoria is truly unique and amazing!! We stayed on Geographe Bay which has beautiful aqua, clear water with lovely white, clean sand but no surf! It is an area full of …
After a week in Perth it was time for a trip south to see a bit more of Western Australia! So a temporary goodbye to Perthfection and hello to Dunsborough. It was a very nice drive down, although the weather was anything but pleasant. Arrived in Dunsborough after a 3 hour drive and checked into the Quay West Bunker Bay Resort, which was phenomenal …
Sadly we packed up and left Pinjarra. We drove inland a little through some of the most beautiful farming country ever, a really pretty drive. We had a look around Bunbury and then headed onto Busselton, where we saw the famous jetty, it's 1.8km long, just amazing. We didn't walk it though ...
... using their 40 year old Massey Ferguson with a front end loader on it. The loader had 2 forks on the front (similar to a fork-lift truck) that he was using to pick up the rolls of nets that had been taken off. It was great fun though he was a very slow driver. That night there was a machine pick at the vineyard we're staying at. The harvester arrived at about 6pm. It's a huge machine that drives directly over the vines. As the vines pass through the opening in the ...

Difficult to fault
Like the previous reviewer I find it difficult to give less than five stars to Bunker Bay. Our reception set the scene - friendly and helpful - quickly unloading cases from our rental car and onto a golf buggy along with our two kids and thence to our two-bedroom suite. Very friendly too in the restaurant for both breakfast and dinner - both excellent quality food - for dinner it is literally prize-winning. Tip - you may wish to book your table for Saturday night as early as possible - we left it too late and had to drive for 25 mins to a very nice winery for dinner. No great problem - just meant I couldn't drink. After a couple of nights we didn't mind a change of menu anyway - remember there is only one restaurant. Lovely beach but it's eco-friendly - as it should be - so no loungers, bars etc. Just the sand, seabirds, rocks and seaweed .... Great infinity pool and, unlike bigger resorts, there appeared to be no inclination to plant towels on the sunbeds and then disappear for hours. Everyone was very polite and civilised!! There's a bit of a token gym - running/walking or cycling - alongside the pool area - as well as a small games room. The suite was great though I do like my bathrooms with locks on them! All very modern - excellently equipped for self-catering if that's what you prefer. There is a new spa/massage building which seemed popular and a couple of tennis courts. All in all it's highly recommended - it's far enough away from Dunsborough to feel remote but once you're there you feel cossetted enough to enjoy the bliss of it all. Enjoy!
Interesting to read the older reviews of this place as they are totally at odds with what we found.
Staff first of all. Absolutely top drawer. A couple of the restaurant staff in particular could not be faulted. Sure, the style is NOT formal but more of the "Aussie Familiar" but this is a beach place after all, however swish, and that is totally appropriate.
Food was superb. Choices are limited but very good. The blue cheese and pear pizza is a must. Drinks are EXPENSIVE. Good quality for sure but AU$13 for a glass of local bubbly is a bit steep.
Not all rooms have ocean views. Gardens are excellent. Bathrooms are to die for. Pool area is sensational but water is cold. As is the ocean this far south.
There are easily availabe discounts that make this place excellent value for money. Forget the rackrate.
Nice ... but ...
We spent 3-4 nights at this hotel. Upon arriving at the door, we waited near the car as we were not sure of what to do (we thought this was supposed to be 5 star). We then unloaded the bags from the car, whilst one of us went to the reception and were finally looked after, only to load the bags back in the car again to drive closer to our ocean room. Our ocean room had a great view into the room in front ... but no ocean. As the previous person notes, there really are not many, if any rooms with a view of the ocean, outside of the main building. I would recommend looking at a map of the hotel before booking a room, so that you can perhaps specify your preference.
We ended up moving rooms to the lake at the bottom, near the ocean. This was quite pleasant, although no privacy, we decided the outlook was more open and pleasant.
The restaurant is limited, especially if staying for a period of time. There is a nice wine bar in dunsborough, along with a fantastic restaurant at the closest vineyard, Wise. Wise restaurant is only open on Fri / Sat though, so if mid week ... you are in a bit of strife.
There were some very helpful staff in the restaurant, some very passionate about good wine, and were very helpful at helping us plan our vineyard visits, including a magic experience at one smaller place - which was invite only. Shame about some of the reception staff, who I think had forgotten who the customer was.
The bar has a lovely lounge, which given the cold snap weather, was pleasant with the great open fire.
The beach was beautiful, yet too cold for swimming. I understand the water is generally quite cool year round ... so beware. Although, it was unseasonally cold.
It is set out a long way from the vineyards of the Margaret River, and from the town of Margaret River (which is more touristy). Generally it is a lovely area though.
One small gripe, I had left my hat in my room (which had great sentimental value). I knew exactly where I had left it, and upon calling the hotel (4-5 times, as the housekeeping person would not return my call), I was told that I did not leave it. The indifference was disappointing.
Overall, Bunker Bay resort did not meet our expectations, but they were very high to begin with.
A strong performer
I travel a lot for businss, have been on many and varied holidays, and believe myself to be a highly difficult and critical guest....so my commets should be read in that light!
We (young family - children 8 months and 2years) stayed for 7 nights at Bunker Bay resort in early January 2006. IT was our first time to MArgaret River.
From the start Bunker Bay made a favourable impression.
The Villas are near new, very well appointed and spacious. We were extremely comfortable. The photos on the resort's web site provide a good representation of our villa's interior.
While the Villas have an outside patio, the local bushland obscures any view. While some villas may have an ocean or lagoon view, I suspect most do not.
While it appears difficult to get a water view, the resort's landscaping is fantasitic and a real feature of Bunker Bay.
The pool is great and has wonderful views out to the ocean. It could have been a little warmer for my liking. There is a bar by the pool which is well attended.
The resort only has one restaurant. We ate breakfast there some mornings. The buffet breakfast was very high quality with a great selection. Young kids dine for free. I cannot comment about lunch or dinner, but do note that it is not a cheap restaurant, nor does it really cater for casual dinning (ie a sandwich at lunch).
The main section of the resort is about 100 - 200 metres in land from the beach. The beach is extra-ordinary. So beautiful and natural. The are very few houses in the vacinity of the resort and only about 3 houses within view from the beach, so you feel quite remote.
The Margaret River areas is great and provides ample for people to do, but you do need a car.
In summary, I recommend the resort highly. It is the pick of places to stay in Margaret River, if you are looking for a larger resort.
Not at all bad
Don't get me wrong Bunker Bay itself is amazing however there are a few things that need improvement if the resort is to rank as a 4 or 5. A few tips for those considering this as a place to stay.
Be aware that the majority of suites DO NOT have views of the ocean.
There is only one restaurant and the range of food is not that great. The price range is very much like an upmarket Sydney or Melbourne Restaurant. A bite sized lunch will cost about $18 (portions very small).
Our fridge (a reminder that these are all self contained) was FULL of stuff to purchase from the mini bar leaving little room for anything!
You will be a 10 min drive from the nearest town (Dunsborough). There is a shopping village, which you will be able to pick up any essentials that the hotel does not offer. It is approx a 30 to 40 min drive to Margaret River (which we have to admit was pretty boring - nothing like the Hunter Valley).
We found the water at the beach (late Jan) was still very cold. Anyone from Perth/Sydney/Brisbane would find it quite 'refreshing'. A lot of people that came to swim didn't last long.
Not an overly kid friendly place - not too much for them to do however I'd say its not marketed as a kid friendly place anyway.
If you are looking for a place to chill out, read a book, have a massage, get a sun tan, then for sure go for it. If however you are looking for loads of things to do then look elsewhere.
Staff, rooms, bathrooms, beds, and bar are all a 4 out of 5.
Very Nice Beach out of this world
We Stayed here in february this year whilst visiting my wifes brother who lives in rockingham WA. First up we stayed in yallingup forest retreat, an absaloute gem. Then we went onto bunker bay and meelup beach WOW WOW WOW is all i can say. You will not be disappointed with the beaches and the bunker bay 5 star resort is exactly what is says LUXURY.
Fabulous resort in Margaret River region
We enjoyed just 2 glorious nights at this year old resort .The architecture was amazing and our studio aprtment with sea views had everything one could desire.Massive bathroom/comfy lounge area.Air conditoning that WORKED(a problem at most hoyels we stayed in).I could have stayed in the apartment for a weekLovely pool, tasty food that wasn't all friedand sensational service.Hotels and resorts all over Western Australia should take a leaf out of their book as we found many establishments dated elsewhere.Keep up the good work
Pure Luxury 5 star plus & the Indian Ocean to boot!
We found this jem in a Uk travel brochure, after trawling the internet. It looked superb and what a deal @ £60/room per night.
We booked 3nts here during a recckie to WA prior to going out to live there.
From moment we arrived it was pure bliss.. the surroundings were well manicured and landscaped, the infinity pool and wow factor of the reception/lobby and bar area took our breath away. It did seem a little out in the wilds, but once got our bearings there was civilisation and and town/supermarked just 10mins away in Dunsborough.
Staff were couteous and helpful, the maid service and rooms were fabulous - we couldve lived here! Only gripe was the prices for the minibar stuff and the restaurant meals (nice for special occasions but expensive to dine each night).
If you want pampering and a relaxing quiet but modern/elegant surroundings its deffo recommended!
Enjoyable and above expectations
Secluded and relaxing resort hotel near Margaret River. Rooms are all bungalows of a decent size, and have cooking facilities. We had a small room which was very comfortable for two adults and two young kids but would have preferred a bigger room had it been available. The reservation staff checking us in was curt and had a constant frown but other than that, most of the staff was reasonably friendly, and in particular, the two concierge staff were informative, helpful and friendly. Common areas of the hotels are of a high standard, except the pool which was too cold. Food was not bad but was not cheap. All in all, the resort was above expecatations.
Beautiful Location, great weather and nice beach. All let down by very poor customer service, the hardest beds and pillows your likely to find in a hotel and the ubiquitous flies!
This new resort in Western Australia is billed as a five star luxury resort nestled by Bunker Bay, one of the few north facing and therefore sheltered bays along the west Australian south coast. It is a great location, however the actual resort needs a lot of improvement if compared to other five star resorts. In two words Staff Training. Incompetent restaraunt staff, unable to remember simple orders and then dropping, spilling and splashing food and drink around the customers. Rude, unhelpful reservation staff, and annoying porters. The actual villas, well as they are all adjoining are not really villas in the true sense of the word, but nevertheless are quite nice inside with good facilities, kitchen, dvd player, two tv's and stereo etc. However in the cavernous bathroom, why spend $11, 000 on a very nice bath and then $30 on a crappy shower?? Doesn't make sense. Hopefully things will improve.
