Big Buddah and other scenes

I don't know how I did it ... 16 hours nonstop from Chicago O'Hare to Hong Kong International. And on United Airlines no less. No fancy Asian airlines for me. Give me an American airline fresh out of bankruptcy with long-haul planes that look like they're from a bad 80s movie. I got ZERO sleep, and pretty much crashed once at the hotel, The Prudential. The hotel sits right on busy Nathan Road, steps away from major shopping and a short walk from a great park and Victoria Harbor. So after a 12...

Hong Kong During Rugby Sevens

Nina and I had an export control conference and meetings to attend in Hong Kong on Monday and Tuesday, so we decided to make a weekend of it and head down to Hong Kong the Saturday before. Also making a weekend of it were 40,000 rugby fans, who had descended upon Hong Kong to watch the Rugby Sevens tournament, in theory, but in reality to have a debaucherous, drunken, rollicking good time in the streets of Lan Kwai Fong. Our co-worker, David, and Nina's brother John, joined us as we took in t...

Surprises in Hong to da Kong!

Hellllllo Kitttty! We made it!!!! Whooop whooop!!! Our flight over was actually surprisingly good with Air Canada. The flight was only about 1/2 full so we were able to spread out. Nadia took some sleep time pills and passed out, while I proceeded to make friends with little green bottles! I don't know what they expected when they are free. Watched a few movies, gambled on Antiques Roadshow with the guys in the seats in front, ate a lot of food, and finally slept with about 2 hours left of th...

Another Take on Hong Kong

Hello dear readers and welcome to this, the first overseas entry of the blog for this trip! I'm typing this in my hotel room at the Prudential Hotel in Kowloon while Linda is downstairs enjoying the opportunity to explore some of the adjacent shopping options.

Rob, Linda and I departed Perth yesterday (Friday) morning on QF67, which left on time at 9:20am and was operated by a Qantas A330-300. The flight was uneventful, as expected, despite the crash of that Air France A330-300 just a ...

The Withdrawl Begins

On Sunday we made our move into real Hong Kong, but not before our final buffet breakfast at Chef Mickey. A Disney shuttle bus took us to the MTR station where we used connecting trains to get to Jordan MTR and thus the Prudential Hotel. We were lucky enough to be able to check-in straight away and begin our sightseeing. I managed to get Belinda a nice case of culture shock after the Disney experience by starting off with a walk down Nathan Road to the Star Ferry Pier. The trip across the har...

Hodge-podge

Doing another update from the phone, this time while riding the train between Hong Kong and Guangzhou. Monday was the first full day for us in Hong Kong itself and it began with a late start. Breakfast was at Pacific Coffee and again included some free internet time for us to take advantage of. It was decided that the primary focus of the day was to be Ocean Park, specifically for the Pandas they have. I knew not to expect too much from the park but Belinda had no idea. One MTR and bus trip l...

Work Class Amusement Park

This update is delayed because the one I had almost completed became corrupted on my phone. Also, the title of this entry isn't a typo on my part but a copy of the text that we saw on an advertisement for Chimelong Paradise in the Guangzhou Metro. We began with an early start on Tuesday in order to catch the bus to and eat breakfast at Hong Kong's Hung Hom Station before our train departed at 8:25am. Our Premium Class seats on the top deck of the KCRC owned Ktt train, with good service includ...

Esprit du Carnival

Our last day in Honkers was another late start, pushing limits of our 12 noon check-out. It was then onto the MTR for the trip to Central/Hong Kong Station for us to check our bags into our Brisbane flight at the Airport Express' in town check-in facility. Because our flight was not departing until 10:45pm we used the day to continue enjoying Hong Kong. This began with a 1 hour long shop at the Esprit close to our hotel that Belinda had eyed off when we first arrived. I must say that the serv...

Reasonable Value For The Money

from besonders
Spent two nights just prior to Christmas with my wife. We were pleasantly suprised by the hotel. Rooms were a good size, clean & tidy. Great location in the heart of Kowloon, near shops and restaurants. Also right above Jordan MTR Station. Did not use restaurant or gym in hotel so cannot comment, but would stay at this hotel again.

Terrible

from bankgirl
Got off to a bad start at this hotel. We had copy of reservation receipt, they had no record of us! Staff were cool and did not smile whilst trying to fix their error. The room, like most HK hotel rooms was a box off a very long corridor. The room smelt stale and overlooked the back of another building. The major problem with the room was the air conditioning. It was very noisy and sounded like a 10 ton truck in the ceiling. The unit could not be turned off as was a ducted system. Needless to say we got very little sleep and left the hotel early next morning very much the worse for wear. Would not reccomend this establishment despite it being one of HK's more affordable and the location handy. Pay the money stay somewhere else.

Much better than expected

from SaraLee
My husband and I spent a week at the Pruton Prudential in November.

The porters helped us with our suitcases as soon as we entered the hotel. The receptionist were polite but we wouldn't say that they were friendly, then again, we only dealt with them three times (check-in, request for key to the mini-safe, and check-out). In our experience, the cleaning lady was much more friendly.

The room was spacious and very clean, so was the bathroom. We did not use the gym and the pool was closed (winter), didn't bother us at all since we were too tired to use either facility after all the sightseeing and walking in Hong Kong. The lobby was a bit small, but who cares? How much time can a person spend in the hotel lobby anyway?

The location of the hotel is excellent, 5-min walk to Temple Street and 15-min walk to the Star Ferry. We did not eat at the restaurants in the hotel so we couldn't comment on them.

The hotel was definitely a lot better than we had expected (after reading some of the reviews here, we were a bit worried) and we would definitely return to Pruton Prudential the next time we visit HK.

What a surprise!

My wife and I visited Hong Kong on the 18th November 2005 and due to the reviews we had read were not looking forward to staying at this hotel.

We thought we must have come to the wrong hotel! The staff were very friendly and helpful, and our room was absolutely superb, we had a great view of Nathan road - the outside glass lifts are amazing! The room was very clean and spacious and had a very clean bathroom. It was my birthday while we stayed and a beautiful cake was brought it to our room totally free of charge!

The various buffets at the hotel are of very good quality and very cheap. The bar offers a happy hour from 4pm until 9pm and has live entertainment every night. We were even asked if we wanted another drink at about 8.30 so it would be in the happy hour offer. We got a late check out very easily and found the location to be spot on, very central for the Kowloon bay area and the Star ferry is just a few minutes walk away. The MTR is just below the hotel so we were able to get to and from the Airport just as easily.

Overall this is a very clean, busy and well run hotel, and we would not hesitate to return.

The pool and gym are a bad joke

from A TripAdvisor Member
We were keen to spend a few days in Hong Kong in a hotel with a gym and a pool. We saw the very convincing photos of the hotel - but what a differnce the reality was! Yes, the position is very convenient to the shopping disctrict but that is the only thing going for it.

The reception area was all 1980's salmon pink, glass and brass. Either there was no airconditioning in the reception area or it wasn't working - which made the wait to check in even more annoying. The rooms were basic; breakfast was ordinary, very expensive and in a restaurant that looked like a cheap nightclub. The pool was an oversized fibro tub on a depressing rooftop and was closed on Sunday's. The "gym" was no more than a small empty hotel room with some old equipment put in there.

Give is a miss. Hong Kong has much better than this!

Not impressed

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Pruton Prudential prides itself to be a 4 star hotel but I wasn't impressed. The staff were neither friendly nor helpful. The room was ok in size but the bathroom was pretty tiny. The fittings all seemed pretty old (esp the shower!). Do ask for a room facing the main street - I got one facing the back and it was pretty gloomy. The gym was a real joke. I went there on my 3rd night (it was closed for maintenance the previous 2 nights) and boy was I disappointed!! The size of the gym was about 1/3 the size of the hotel room - there were only 4 machines and some weights. All of them looked really worn so i'm not exactly sure what kind of maintenance they undergone. I tried a couple of them for a bit and they really did squeak! the hotel also does not take responsibility for accidents and mishaps at the gym so use the machines only if you've bought a really good travel policy. The plus point about the hotel is the location - it's linked/connected to Jordan MTR which makes travelling extremely convenient. Walking to Tsim Tsai Tsui (Avenue of Stars, Space Museum, etc) and Mongkok took about 25min each. Temple Street night market was a 15min walk away.

Great location

from LouBLou27
A good hotel with a fantastic location on Nathan Road and right above the Jordan MTR station. We had booked a double room for three nights. The rooms were clean, spacious with a huge bed. The bathroom was clean and as the room was used for a place to lay your head after very busy days sightseeing and very busy nights sampling the Hong Kong night life, we were very happy with our choice of hotel. The pool is not particularly picturesque but it's functional to cool down and do a few laps, not widths, as it's a long, narrow pool. As a base, this is a really good hotel, the bar was nice, the restaurant however, I would not recommend.

A Nice Facility

from A TripAdvisor Member
All in all a pleasant stay. Room for improvement in the operating hours of the Gym and Pool facilities.

Located in good shopping area. Taylor right across the street. Lots of local flavor all around and a nice modern facility within with pleasant staff and good bus service to the airport.

Oh dear!

from billy-a-55
Location is great for sightseeing. The only good thing about the hotel was the room. Spacious and well equipped, maids do a superb job as everything spotless. As for the rest - what a let down. The gym is about 6'x6', the pool was not even open (no one to supervise/maintain it i was told). The breakfast was poor, room service a joke, very unfriendly staff on reception, porter watches as you struggle with your bags - will not be going back. Tried this place for a change as do business in TST. This place is so unlike HK where you come to expect ( i go there regularly on business) smiles from everyone. Don't expect any smiles here!

Enjoyed the location

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel wasn't as spectacular as stated in terms of beauty nor are known for their customer service. Shockingly, the only person who greeted me was the nice cleaning lady when I ventured in and out for at least 8 times in a two day span. The room I was in was quite comfortable though for the price I paid. If you're just looking for a place to stay and do not mind the minutiae, this is the place to be. You have access to the best areas in Kowloon! Not to mention, the MTR is just below the hotel where you can get connected to virtually everywhere, even to the airport. Recommend for travelers on a budget.
