However, in such beautiful natural and urban settings the contrast becomes much more apparent; from Sugarloaf the proximity of huge favelas (slums) to affluent beaches is obvious, and the beautiful arches of Lapa shelter police vanes and the homeless. We arrived at the cog railway that takes you up the statue – it was a zoo of people so it was great to have Eliana there to help us. She was a great guide, half Turkish, half Brazilian (a true Carioca) and very knowledgeable. We took the carriage up to the top, through the amazingly lush rainforest (As Eliana ...

... I have to say that I wasn't really sure what to expect when I got here. The taxi took me up a steep hill with shops, bars and people surrounding me. The first thing that hits you is the noise, whether it's music blaring out or people talking and laughing. There were food stalls selling hot food, drinks, you name it. My first impression was that this was a lively place with lots happening - I loved it! The guy driving the taxi thought I was totally crazy of course, but I'm ...
