Return to South Africa - The Fertile Land

... else I can tell you about to change the subject and ignore the point......why shouldn’t I, everyone else does.

There is give and take....quite a lot of the latter in most cases and not always reciprocated with a monetary exchange.....more than likely the blare of burglar alarms. There is change, some of it good, some of it bad....unfortunately a lot has stayed the same, no matter what the white man says. I have seen re-assuring sights like racially integrated groups of ...

Step 1: Find a car

... spend our time productively and price all the camping equipment we’re going to need so most of the next few days were spent going from shop to shop comparing prices. I spent Tuesday night playing pool and drinking with Alfonzo and George (the Aussie). At about quarter to four we decided enough was enough and I headed into my room. Alice was still awake. I hopped into bed and left the light on, Alice got up switched it off and walked back towards the bed. But instead of reaching ...

Saapuminen Johannesburgiin ja pojan tapaaminen

... meitä hotellilta aamulla ja ajoimme noin puolen tunnin matkan Sowetossa sijaitsevaan lastenkotiin. Sowetossa sijaitseva Othandwenin lastenkoti on ollut poikamme koti lähes pojan syntymästä lähtien eli vajaan kahden vuoden ajan. Hyvin vartioidun lastenkodin (mm. auto tutkittiin ennen sisään ajamista ja ulos ajettaessa) ovista käveli tänään sisään hyvin jännittyneet ja jopa odotuksesta hämmentyneet, mutta onnelliset vanhemmat. Avattuamme oven vastaamme juoksi ...

News from Sin City

... Constitution Hill - with a visit to "Number 4" prison, the Old Fort, and obviously the Constitutional Court - in the morning, followed by an afternoon-long visit to the Apartheid Museum.

The latter especially was an edifying and intense experience. Housed in a big newish complex outside the city centre - and just a stones-throw-away from the Gold Reef City theme park ...

Lion Park

... The next morning was our first day as volunteers. We had expected some sort of introduction to the Lion Park itself, the staff working there, but more importantly an introduction to the work we was there to do. No one from the Lion Park or i-to-i turned up, but fortunately a volunteer (Leah) from the previous group still had two days left, so she showed us what we were here to do. We were disappointed once we found out what our stay as ...

... of the long layover, they refunded us $20 which we intend to use for lunch. We found a small restaurant called Harry's Tap Room ... and, I'll tell you, I had one of the best lunches of my life. If ever you have occasion to be stuck at Dullas Airport for a time, look up Harry's. I had roasted red pepper and crab soup and the Cuban sandwich. Margie had baked brie. In addition to the food's being ...

... of popularity but how dangerous they are. The next day we were not so lucky, the weather was really ****** and rained on us all day. The day before it was so humid and i was so hot and sweaty and no one barely cracked a window, i was dying!! On this morning on got on the bus and stinky old German lady said i should sit up front by Stephan because he keeps the window open! I said maybe she should switch seats if she doesn't like the window open, and actually we would like ...

South Africa Trip Summary & Photos

... backpackers. The local food is simple, basically starch (either rice or maize), sauce (various curries), meat (chicken or beef), and cabbage in a variety of preparations. It is also quite delicious and doesn't get the "real cuisine" street-cred it is due. Plus, who can complain about dinner and drinks for $2 per person? Even little things, like dinner tonight or like venturing out to a supermarket or a liquor store, can be really fun ...

finding my feet in Pretoria - a different world

... While one of the maids speak English the other and the gardener do not (I think they speak Zulu) and the my cousin speaks Afrikaans with them. In Pretoria there are many lovely cool terraces, large front yards and powerfully tall trees: ivys, huge potted plants, green, green ferns and grass, huge plants and trees in so many varieties of green it is almost unbelievable. Other than palm, jacaranda and fever tree, I have no idea what they are. Flowers abound in ...

... then take it from you". Words of praise for our next destination! Although truly I have not yet once met a South African during my stay who has not regailed me with stories of nightime burglaries at gun point, car hijackings and friends who had been battered to near death for their watch. South Africa is beautiful, but it has struck me more than ever on this trip the dangers that are everywhere. So we set off for Cape Town at the crack of dawn and after driving ...
