Ready, Set, Cape Town

I made it to South Africa! Being held at the Breakwater Lodge before we can move into our housing on main campus. Sidenote, this hotel is on UCT's Graduate School of Business campus, it's kind of fun to be seeing it. Next post to come with be a description of where I am in the world; Nicole, Donna, TJ and Curt requested that I do a quick geo lesson. Cheers!!

Day 1: The beginning

"In the beginning God created heaven and earth" Genesis, chapter 1, verse 1.

After a fitful but reasonable refreshing few hours sleep, I woke about 5.30am to daylight and a magical Antarctic vista - or so it seemed. As fall as the eye could see, an undulating snow field of pure white cumulus clouds stretched to meet the sparklingly clear blue sky on the distant horizon. Eventually a hole formed in the clouds to reveal the sands of what I guess to be either the Namibian or K...

Day 2: Table Mountain

And it is. If not quite heaven on earth, Cape Town really is a stupendous city.

Having had a good night's sleep we awoke raring to go. Breakfast was a coffee and a muffin in the room, before leaving for the day’s city bus tour. We pick up the hop on-hop off open top London Routemaster look alike bus opposite the hotel. For Rand 120 this would take us on a tour around the outer limits of the city and also provide us with a free earphone running commentary. Great value....

That big ole table!

... places - the sooner I give up the cigs the better! There were ladders to climb parts of it and we even had to scramble up the side of a waterfall at one point which made things interesting! The landscape up the top is amazing - quite moon-like in places and the views just stunning. All in all a very enjoyable hike - a ram is never happier when there is a summit to reach! <br>The wine tour tomorrow so I'm sure there will be some interesting stories to come from that ...

For the Beauty of the Earth... even bats.

... we found a pathway out that contained the exhibit of the day--BATS. These bats were in huge clumps of anywhere between 50-100, and they were all hanging at the top of the cave, sleeping. Some of the guys decided it would be great to try to knock some down, so they climbed to the top of the wall and did so. We all moved quickly ahead and made our way eventually out without having to tango with them. When we emerged, the sight in front of us almost brought me ...

... to engage them, whereas our guide wanted to fight. Yet now, he told us, he believed in Truth and Reconciliation - not forgiveness - but he recognized that the greater victory is won through diplomacy, by gaining much while sacrificing little in return. Would it be better, he asked, rhetorically, to exact revenge, even thought it would almost certainly lead to bloodshed and more unnecessary torture and death - or, through engagement, bring about a better ...

... give it to you for your socks". At which time, I take off my shoes and start removing my socks. Then hey says my socks are dirty and then he will have to charge me 50 rand for the washing soda... So in the end, I get a wooden zebra for 50 rand. He then declines the pair of dirty socks. I went though this process a couple of times and believe me, it is fun once you realize that the haggling is over one or two dollars!

My first two days of school

... away at the totally different dynamic. Not only was this class all white, but it only has about 18 students in it (UCT has about 26,000). This class (Entomology) seems like it will be a lot of fun and even though we have a required field trip during the semester break, it should be an interesting experience. My next class is Xhosa and once again it is a very small class. I counted only 19 people so it will be nice if I need extra help. The language has 3 main ...
