Ready, Set, Cape Town

I made it to South Africa! Being held at the Breakwater Lodge before we can move into our housing on main campus. Sidenote, this hotel is on UCT's Graduate School of Business campus, it's kind of fun to be seeing it. Next post to come with be a description of where I am in the world; Nicole, Donna, TJ and Curt requested that I do a quick geo lesson. Cheers!!

I'll be Straight Pimping Mon

We found out that when they put their pink shoes on, you better stay out of their way, because that’s when they are “straight pimpin’ mon.” We met Shakir, because we were asking at the front desk how to get to the American embassy. He looked up the location on the computer, started laughing hysterically, and told ...

... don't ever "go home"--they hang out 24 hours a day. There are women sweeping the street, which seems like a good idea, but they don't clean up the trash; they shove it all into the edges of the street, or the places of the sidewalks where areas are cut out around the trees. Whenever it rains, the water gathers in these places as well, so there are little soupy areas of trash here and there. At least they do "clean" the areas we're walking on ...

Final Destination - Cape Town

... as he had a banana in his pocket....well that's what he told us anyway! :-) The views were stunning. We then had the obligatory photo shoot at the Cape of Good Hope. Just like the website that I've beeen looking at for all this time. That was that point that I knew it was finally coming to a close. We had a great group on the truck with just a couple of exceptions (some Canadians speak very loudly and like ...

... in only once up to my shoulders and my feet went numb. It was crazy but it was so fun to hang out with the locals and work on my tan. Afterward, we went to La Med for a drink and watched this incredible thunderstorm roll over Table Mountain. There was lots of rain, lightning and thunder accompanied by oohs and ahhs of the crowd gathered at the outdoor bar. Today, i was back with the penguins and i have to admit that i missed them. There were few volunteers so ...

Departing Uganda, South Africa arrival

... David (Thanks for the connection PC) who gave us the keys to our apartment in Camps Bay. Upon telling David about the delayed bag he gave Al a wetsuit and surfboard to borrow until the bag arrived. He also set the wheels in motion for Al to have a custom board made for less than Aus$300! We arrived at our apartment which was like a palace in comparison to our accommodation over the past 6 weeks. Big queen size bed with nice soft sheets and doona, a clean kitchen ...

Get on the Left Side, Stupid!!

... to quickly since I had to hire a car for our transport. The guys at Avais were really helpful and gave me some advise. Simply put, they advised, "Don't drink and drive, and don't hit anything." Fair enough, no drinking South Africa's world famous wine whilst driving thru the V&A Waterfront. Check. However, it was still a bit hair raising to drive to our apartment. "Left side! Get on the left side, Alain!!" Angela and I were both pretty ...

... but it's still cold when you don't have a heater. I think we have both decided that we are going to cave and go buy one. I think it would be safer to have one rather than burning thousands of candles! Overall our new career endeavors have been pretty successful! I am learning on a second-by-second basis. I have become completely absorbed with all forms of South African press. Trying to catch up on all the latest magazines, who is the editor, their assistant, where they live ...

... better on the surface than in the water. So all in all, the day was quite successful and I returned to Cape Town satisfied. The next day it was off to Jo Burg for safari. After maybe a few too many beers it was yet another very early start to get picked up for my 4 day safari in the Kruger National Park. After a 5 hour drive we arrived at my bush camp, very hot and sweaty. I met up with the rest of the group. A couple from Cape Town who had a ...

The history of Stellenbosch is that it is the second oldest European settlement in the Western Cape Province, South Africa after Cape Town, and is situated about 50 kilometers away along the banks of the Eerste River.
