2) A shorter route is the direct route that goes via Reute in Austria. It is a scenically extremely beautiful route, as it leads through the Ammer Valley with 2000 meter high mountains towering on both sides of the valley. However, there are some problems. Reute is located in Austria just south of Füssen. It is however important to find the right turn off to Linderhof ...
As Füssen was an evident tourist trap, with half the signs in German, the other half in Japanese, we decided that it would be better to seek local food outside Füssen. Three restaurants were recommended to us by our Allgäu farmer host.
1. Die Fischerhütte in Hopfen am See
2. Sennerei in Hopferau
3. Der Hirsch in Hopferau
The Fischerhütte is primarily a fish restaurant serving fresh fish from the ...
... free camping ahead :) We drove towards Munich and parked once again on the street in a small town, which has by far been our most common theme for free camping but is usually the safest choice for us. The best part about Fred is that he is small enough to park on the street and does not look like a campervan, so anyone who sees him most likely would think it was a mail truck or something…at least that is what we tell ourselves :)
Füssen, Bavaria, Germany armajor7High up in the Allgäu Alps, a few miles from the village of Pfronten, we visited a very isolated for over 100 years family-run luxury hotel for dinner. A beautiful wooden structure with a grand view of the Alpe foothills, and cow bells of cows grazing in the pristine alpine highlands could be heard throughout our dinner stay.
The hotel served a gourmet dinner of freshly prepared local and international dining variety.
... The Schloss is the last stop on the Romantic Road in Germany. There were many Japanese tourists, which was fun for us to see. Unfortunately one side of the castle was under repair, but it was still beautiful to see the castle in its lush surroundings.
Hohenschwangau, Bavaria, Germany fiseb... too.
The rest of the tour took us to Linderhof castle and Neuschwanstein castle. What magical looking places they were. Neuschwanstein is the castle Walt Disney uses the sillohette of at the start of his movies. Anyway, after the trip it was back to Munich for a day or so and then on the plane home.
... face-down in a shallow part of Lake Starnberg together with the doctor who certified him. No one really knows what happened but talk of suicide and murder has not stopped echoing around these Bavarian foothills throughout the centuries. We exited the castle and climbed the gate that leads to the waterfall bridge from ...
Fussen, Germany zentoAnother work conference for my parents brought us to Oberammergau for a week. We stayed in the cutest little wooden cottage - like the whole thing ceiling to floor and including flowering window boxes was made out of wood! Totally picturesque like you've read about in Brothers Grimm fairy tales. Aromatic town bakery. Absolutely enchanting.

Today we drove up into the mountains to see the fairy tale castle, Neuschwanstein. This is another of Ludwig's castles, this one unfinished, and served as the inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle. It ...
