    ... 7 pm on Saturday until 7 pm on Sunday. We enjoyed walking around the parks on Sunday morning and watching the different acts perform, and seeing everybody enjoying the sunshine.

    For Sunday lunch we went to a burger van and bought a hamburger to eat in the square. This contained everything imaginable (cheese, ham, egg, sweetcorn, potato chipsticks) but no burger. As it did contain ham we didn't feel in a position to argue.

    ... and swaying. And that's just the party political broadcasts.

    There is a huge evangelical cathedral very close to our apartment, and on a Sunday people drive in from miles around, dressed in their best and carrying what look like picnic hampers, to make a day of it in the church. It is a huge cream painted monstrosity of a building that looks like a citadel or the Ministry of Love in 1984.

    ... about this with my Portuguese teacher, and asked why they don't have self-service check-outs in Brazil. She said there are three reasons: (1) the customers couldn't be trusted not to steal the groceries; (2) it would get rid of jobs; (3) she told me there is a class of people in Brazil who don't want to do things for themselves. They would much rather have someone else pack their shopping bags, ring up their groceries, deliver them to their houses. ...

    ... For example, we saw posters for a big thrash metal festival which was going on on Saturday featuring purveyors of loud noises from all over Brazil and a headlining act from Spain. I was quite taken by a band called Cruel Face, imagining it would be a band of cadaverous wraiths, but when we looked them up on the Internet they turned out to be big middle aged men. I imagine their music is unbearable.
