... flabergasted as to how we keep ending up in these situations. Jay then brings out his turbans. One is made of foam and looks like it was bought in a 7/11 and the other is a beautiful multicolored turban. We put them on and pose while holding his gun and sword. I don't make this stuff up, I swear. Dinner was eventually served (around 10:30 pm) and we don't know what to do. The family does not eat with us, saying they will eat when we leave. OOOOOKAYY. We ...

Mighty Merangarh in the Big Blue City

... completely dominates the Jodhpur skyline. The day was very hot by then, so we retreated to our haveli and collapsed.

The next day we took a rickshaw 5km up a winding road to Merangarh fort. The place was heaving with Indian people as well as a few Western tourists here and there. With our admission we got an audio tour which turned out to be fantastic and really made the visit. As we climbed up the steep slopes at the entrance to the ...

May 4th, 20th installment

... She is immediately likeable for the twinkle in her eye and the smile. She shows us into her house, passing a large Popsicle maker and freezer. She is also the local ice cream dealer and probably has the only freezer in town. She is joined by her cute young daughter of about 17 years, who inherited her mother's smile. Communication is difficult because they speak only Bishnoi and Hindi although a few of the younger kids had ...

From Delhi to Jodhpur, Jasailmer and Udaipur

... in design and workmanship, all in marble and are in keeping with the quality of other Jain temples we have seen. Indeed, this is probably the most stunning we have so far seen. It was strange to see a Mimosa tree growing inside the temple said to be over seven hundred years old and still flourishing. Externally the complex is also very grand albeit in need of cleaning . It has dramatic spires surrounded by cupolas which cover the ...

Udaipur to Jodhpur

... condidition with original paint work still in tact. It even had an army of monkeys stationed outsid to warn off the intruders.... From Kumbalgarh we drove to Ranakpur which comprises of 4 Jain temples and around 72 individual shrines and 1440 individualy carved marble pillars. Utterly stunning and mesmerizing, even those who have seen more than enough temples in their lifetime are blown away by this sight. And from there the long road to Jodpur.............

... kid when they were 16, and now they have 5!!!!! Yep, I was in shock somewhat. If I was her, I'd have 2 kids by now. Tiger said its not uncommon for kids to be married at 4 or 5 years old, though they don't go live together until 13 or 14. It goes without saying that all the marriages are arranged. Anwyas, Tiger was really chatty and friendly and interesting. We stopped at a little village part way through the morning. We sort of talked to ...

Across the desert!

... Jaipur to Jodhpur, which was very comfterable, though I thought deluxe was pushing it (I don't any more). Jodhpur was great, I spent the afternoon and evening wandering through the market and old city, had one of the best lassis I've had so far, found a really nice park to sit in, and a lovely roof top resturant with a stunning view of the fort. I stayed at the Youth Hostel, I had the entire dorm to myself. It's off season, so there are so few tourists. The 18th, I ...

Jeep Safari

... here.... "car, car...") This evening, a private celebration of traditional music and dance is held at the city's Mehragahr Fort, followed by dinner on the ramparts. Live report This is desert heat, unlike the humid tropical heat we've had elsewhere. This morning at breakfast "on the patio" overlooking the formal gardens, it was actually quite pleasant. But, alas, trouble on the homefront: from the heat and sun during the visit to the ...

Rajesthan Adventure

... It was the festival of Hoil (colour is thrown on you by everyone). It was great fun and the men drink whiskey and beer all night. We moved onto a small village 30Km south where we had our camel safari. My legs and pelvis have not had any pain thrusted on them like this! However, with the pain to one side - the sunset on the sand dunes were spectacular and worth it. Today we moved to Jodpur - it took 7 ...

We started the tour in Delhi, which is really just a busy city with no sidewalks so you are constantly dodging rickshaws, bikes, cars, people, big scary gutters, piles of unknown stuff....so I was happy to leave. We took the overnight train to Jodhpur on Christmas and managed to entertain ouselves ...
