A weekend in Paradise

... we might be in at the deep end some what (gonna have to spend lots this week with my nose in the Ox handbook!). The evening was whiled away with rum, Bob Marley Kareoke and a toast to Michael Jackson (“he was bad but he was good”) which lead to lots of Michael Jackson singing impressions!!! NB Bob Marley is not quite the same sung by a drunken Scottish girl and a high pitched American . Kareoke country and western in a ...

Day 1

... American style-it was worth watching for the cheesy acting alone. Met some of the other students who, it turns out, had also been in San Ignacio on saturday night with the Richard, Richard and Chen (the other medics from Cambridge)and we’d missed them at the Faya Water bar by about 5 minutes! Walked back to the house for spicy chicken, rice, plantain and fresh mango juice for lunch, had a little snooze on the rocking ...

two broken busses later,.. we're back

... faired pretty well.. some people got wet. everyone survived the night. the next day we had a lecture on watersheds and hiked to Big rock falls. a really neat 20 ft (?) waterfall with a couple of rock pools for swimming. again .. yay for the water proof camera. the hike was brutal.. 1 hr up and down these steep rocky trails.. we were all sweaty and stinky. but the water was so cool and refreshing. we opted to walk back along the road.. less hills, but ...

Land of Garifuna and Rasta

... Ras Tafari. Ras means "head" or duke and Selassie's pre-coronation name was Tafari Makonnen. Rastas believe that Selassie is the reincarnation of Jesus. In fact, Haile Selassie was the 225th in an unbroken line of Ethiopian monarchs who descended from the Biblical King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. Who knows? I did like what I read though: they are apolitical, regard the body as ...

Un-Belize-able (!)

... know what hit him and as we docked at the Caye shook his head and complained that the sea was 'Rough as hell'. We all got soaked through, like on the way to Utila. So much so that on the return journey hannah took her goggles with her, but this time it was much smoother. You should check out Tobacco Caye on google earth. Its ridiculous. It is much smaller than the inside of any football stadium i've been to, and from anywhere on the island you can see the sea in all ...

Day 7 - by Leah

... is growing closer every day, as they share the trials and tribulations of the mission field - exhaustion, body oder, dirt, bug bites, and being in a constant state of looking out for others (an attribute we hope they will apply to their daily lives). They are growing and stretching and its amazing to watch! Jesus is amongst them all day long, and they know it and love it and are learning to live it. Keep praying!

Along the Western Highway

... children were walking or biking along the highway in their uniforms every time we passed a school. Every time we drove past a school or entered a village, we had to cross multiple speed bumps and pedestrian ramps: large speed bumps with a flat top wide enough for people to walk across. The ramps were obviously much safer for pedestrians than a crosswalk, but would be fairly annoying when trying to make decent time on a highway. Speed ...

Oops....

... near the border of Mexico - things didn't improve. The place is a bit of a ghostown, and has a sort of eerie feel to it. This feeling is only magnified by the place that I am staying at, which is owned by the (albeit very friendly) slightly crazed Mexican, whose name I forget. The place's other two occupants are a creepy shy English girl from Hertforshire, and an even creepier dude from Israel. I can't quite put my finger on what freaks me out so much about the place, it ...
