After about 5 hours of walking we decided to negotiate the timetable at an italian bus stop and I got us a bus with a stop two blocks from where we are staying at the Mercure. Tonight I think we might find our way back to the little pizza restaurant in the old city. There is a pizza on the menu that has octopus. ... every column is built of stone, mortar to exact specifications, it is completely covered and there are exactly 666 arches from the city gates to the basilica front doors. ... local lady who SPOKE SOME ENGLISH... and had the same stick shift as our car... she gets into the car to put it in reverse ( meanwhile 2 more cars come from the other direction going slowly... the lady gets the VW turned around and we follow her to our turn off...No words spoken .. mom and I know that "someone" was looking after us ( plus the 8 bottles of Holy Water " from the Vatican in our suitcase probably helped too! We honk several times ...
