Centurion - next to Pretoria

... light you are mugged. There's actually also a cure that should help prevent such situations - when you have the street-traders approaching you, you look deep in their eyes and observe their face, so that it is understandable that you will remember that face, just in case. And this signal is (should be) enough to escape the chewing gum marker ;-) In Centurion, we have had 2 evenings so far. At the first night I arrived very late, around 11 PM, and went ...

Zimbabwe terrors

... empty. Last month a new 200,000 Zimbabwe dollar note was launched, in a bid to tackle the country's inflation, the highest in the world. The country's government has created a commission to find a way to control soaring living costs. But correspondents say that as long as Zimbabwe has a shortage of staple foods, including maize, food shortages are likely to continue. Critics have blamed President Mugabe's policies, especially the seizure of farms, for ...

My stomach: The Pain Gizzard Filled with Glass Sha

Friday morning I woke well rested. The ten hours of sleep was definitely needed after traveling the day before. I dressed and went to congregate with the other day walkers. Today we would be traveling to a farm museum in Pretoria. I didn't eat breakfast because of a lack of apetite. The excess sleep provided me with a good deal of energy, however it did not improve the condition of my stomach. The farm museum was a half hour commute from the house. The entire ride over ...

... house of Mandela and Arch Bishop Tutu. Apparently it is the only place in the world where two Nobel prize recipients houses are on the same street. We ate lunch at Wandie's which is a fairly famous eating establishment there in Soweto. We actually heard about in from some locals when we were down in Cape Town, but later saw it in the Lonely Planet guide as well. It seems that anybody who is anybody and been to Soweto has ...

... entertained by artists, storytellers and drummers at The Boma restaurant. The restaurant staff were encouraging us to try a Mopani worm (or Masimbi in the local language). Apparently it is a local delicacy. The only thing delicate about this was our stomachs after eating the awful little grubs! As it seems with most insects, they are dried and/or deep fried in oil so that the only flavour of these insects is the oil itself. Best to ...

Confronting the baboons, back to Pretoria

... her eggs, there was little evidence of the work the day before. Just some signs of digging and covering up and some small stones which must have been the last things she put on them. The eggs stay there until they hatch and the monitor has nothing more to do with them after laying and burying them. Had to pay the exorbitant park entry fee but we continued to see some amazing things including: rhino tracks, another type of hornbill ...

... the rotting food in the fridge, it's lucky we both have strong stomaches and good constitutions! First day has gone without mishap. Abbs went on her first ride on a slug (thats horse talk for a slow horse). She is hoping for an upgrade tomorrow. Weather is still very hot (did I already mention that!). Promise to try and get some piccies up soon. All the best Keep smiling (People never know what your thinking!) Abbs and Simon xxx

Chased Out Of Botswana

... in one day, but it ended up just fine. We had two boarder crossings, Zimbabwe/Botswana and Botswana/South Africa, and a pee stop here and there, time went fairly quickly. The most amazing part was that we saw about 30 elephant within approzimately 15 minutes as we drove down the highway. Our guides werew so great that they humored the four of us and stopped occassionally to let us take more photos. In one spot there were elephants on both side of the road, but ...
