Today we went and had a look at the big lion that Belfort is famous for.It is a big statue that you can't see from a distance because it blends in with the face of the hill it fronts, unless you know it is there. It is made by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi who is famous for erecting the Statue of Liberty and commemorates The French who defended Belfort in the Franco-Prussian War. We then had some more lunch where I had some more vegies- and hot chips! I have had some major cravings ...
Belfort, Franche-Comté, France tonkinI spent a nice day with Daniel. He took me to have a look at the castle that overlooks the town, it is made from a kind of red rock whiwh comes from a nearby mountain.
He also drove me up to the top of one of the mountains where we walked to the top of another hill to take a look at a statue commemorating Jean 'D Arc. I was also treated to a piece of pie- a sweet pie- covered in these purple berries which the restaurant is famous for. There were few people around ...
... worse tactics by pretending that they are collecting for the deaf and disabled. I hate them so much and I now get this feeling of vindictive pleasure everytime I say no.
There was this one instance outside the train station when I was approached by this man giving out newspapers, I told him I only spoke English. He then replied 'oh you are English'. He then showed me a picture of his daughter and asked if I could give him ...

Belfort, Franche-Comté, France mapoiratAfter hitchhiking our way across the plains of northern France, we arrived in Epinal at midnight. We waited in the cold for a while as Marion's Mum had fallen asleep when she realised she still had 20 mins before she had to pick us up. I was happy for the wait as I was well-rugged up and Marion was complaining about the cold.. It made me feel really tough and I even stole her scarf and threw water on her to complete my triumph. We spent a week catching our breath; Marion from ...
Epinal, Lorraine, France jimbojohnsonThe day after the night before.. I was a bit heavy headed but it was well worth it and I was well looked after. Today we were heading to Marion's hometown of Epinal for a week at home. To get there via train it would cost an arm and a leg (they are quite traditional still, i think the exchange rate called for a forearm and two ankles.. anything?), so we decided to think outside the oblong and utilise the most powerful ...
Pourquoi pars-tu me demandent certains? T'as pas peur me demandent ...
Belfort, Franche-Comté, France mapoirat... told us that our €6 wasn't enough to utilise the chairs and umbrellas. Defeated, I complied (curious about what I actually paid for) and headed for a grassed area that was populated by all the fat old chicks from Mennagio and surrounding villages. I was desperate to go for a swim but after the initial temp test, I got scared and decided on more sun; it was set resemble a swim in Mount Franklin, fresh, clean and ice cold. I finally plucked up the courage and braved the cold ...
Epinal, Lorraine, France jimbojohnsonIt took a bit of train hopping at three different stations, one cup of hot chocolate and six games of Jin Rummy, Go Fish, and War before we made it to our stop . . . Okay a little background first . . . last year Les asked me if I could go anywhere in the world, where would I go? I surprised him by saying Ronchamp, which is very small town in France(just across the border from Switzerland), which is home to Notre Dame ...
Ronchamp, Franche-Comté, France lkjr77Today was a great day! We finally got a good night's sleep (nearly 11 hours) and were up bright and early. We walked across the street from our hotel (http://www.hotel-hannong.com), where we bought some delicious French donuts (Krispy Kreme, eat your heart out) on the way to Strasbourg's cathedral. We arrived at the front of the cathedral just as the 8:00 bells were echoing throughout the sleepy ...
