Open up and say aaahh!

First off, there is nothing to "do" in Bratislava. But for some reason, I really enjoyed myself. It certainly has a laid-back feel to it, but I wonder if my enjoyment of it was just a product of right time/right place. The old town, the main tourist draw, is quite nice but not much different from other old towns in European cities. We had many a pleasant hour strolling its streets & taking the requisite photographs of the ...

... shorter, and not as wide. It was still very impressive though, and would have been better if the construction equipment wasn't there. From there we essentially wandered aimlessly, passing by a music house with treble clefs everywhere, and a city park, where the water running through it was about 2 feet wide. Not a very big canal. We then walked the ring road and passed the opera house before buying a few postcards and having a coffee. After coffee, that's where ...

... I was in her debt and I tried to pay her back some money but she was not having any of it. Once I got off at the stop I needed it took me a while to find the backpackers but luckily there was some nice people on hand to show me the way. I had hurt that the women in Slovakia were some of the most beatiful in Europe, I would have to say that I was a little bit dissapointed. After coming from Lubjianja, Slovenia where every woman was stunning they had a lot ...

... dawned on me that she was asking "What is your age" and that she was 23 and wanted to know if I am older than 26 since that is the cutoff for reduced fares. Pointing to her age was the only way she knew to prompt me to give mine. I wrote down 37 and pushed the paper back towards her and a few seconds later I was very relieved to hear the ticket printing. Not wanting her to feel bad I told her my English was not so good and she smiled and said neither was ...

Dear God I am in Eastern Europe!

... area and even making the trek up to Bratislava Castle a few times. Unfortunately, the castle was under renovation and we didn't get to see it all but it seemed like quite a nice place to stroll about; in fact you can even see Austria from on point of the castle. One day we stumbled upon the EuroCultured festival, taking place directly in front of the Slovak National Theater. There were upwards of twenty graffiti artists doing insane ...

... They feel very much more fortunate than Hungary. It has been such an eye opener. Walked back to the boat...Shopped in the Sophia (boat we were docked against) arrived in time for the entertainment for the evening...5 girls...Aphrodite group...strings..piano...flute, etc. They were excellent. Off to bed to get up early as we arrive in Vienna, Austria for a full day starting with breakfast at 7am. Take care...

... translated her denial, because although she had a large stack of coins in front of her, that was for the entire day (it was 9:30 am) and couldn's spare any. That's Bratislava!, the guy said and we went outside. Eventually we managed to buy tickets from a small shop and asked the old lady what bus to take to the center. She said 93, we took it and off we were. In Bratislava you have to purchase tickets for a certain time interval to be spent in the public transport, 15, 30 or 60 ...

A tale of two cities

... painting alone. The experience was slightly hampered by their use of a self-devised system of hieroglyphics to label the pieces, which since I was never going to devote the time to learn it meant that they were effectively unlabelled, and the lack of an explanatory text in any language other than Slovakian. One of the curators didn't mind me taking photos, so you can see the good bits from her section. The middle floor of the gallery consisted of ...

James couldn't get any washing done because there was no washing powder and no dryer. What a gyp! I guess we just weren't prepared for this hostel lifestyle. After a long sleep was rudely interrupted by some fellow backpackers singing along to loud dance music in English with heavy accents (yah bay-bee ...

visiting nice towns in Slovakia

... historical gothic and renaissance buildings. In the historical center, you will find more than 50 gothic, renaissance and early-baroque houses of nobles with arcade interior courtyards. The original town walls from the 14th and 15th century still remained preserved around the town center and they are about 2 km long. Several towers, bastions, and Kosická and Menhardtovská town gates have been reconstructed. Presov is an important cultural ...
