... The preservation was amazing. Leather headdresses for horses, quivers for arrows and textile blankets all survived. The headdresses were very interesting as they commonly gave the horses antlers. I'm guessing the stag was a special animal for these peoples. The array of arrowheads and archery equipment was especially interesting to me. Some of those arrowheads were just plain mean looking! Big wide blades of various shapes designed to cut the arteries in the target. ...

... opposite Kazan Cathedral, and 4.50 later for a latte, we were ready to go and see the Alexander Nevsky monastery which has some famous graves (Tchaikovsky, Dostoevsky some of Pushkin’s friends and a CF Tolstoy who was an architect – a possible relation?) we also visited the bones of Alexander Nevsky.

We then got on the bus bound for Novgorod, one of the oldest towns in Russia and a UNESCO heritage site.

... St Nicholas Cathedral, Town Hall, Fortress, monuments, various other small palaces, all the bridges over the River Neva. The driving tour was very informative and our tour guide was great, we learnt a lot from her about the history of the city.
