... there. I walked down and hill.....and realized....holy **** I was in a crater....it was freaking huge....that must of been a big boom....it was like 70,000 lbs of explosives in it. Wow...its all I had in me head....wow....back to the bike time to find some Canadian sites....Hill 62...a Canadian battleground.
So off I went...the skies opened up...time to put me gear on so pull in under a tree and got me slickers on and off I went...not far away ...
... magic in the all-too-brief Christmas truce.
The most personal experience of all came close to the museum's exit. I logged into one final computer and found screen after screen of fallen men who shared my surname. Could some of them have been distant British or Canadian relatives, lost on a broken branch of my family tree? Could my life have been different if they had lived?
Poignant maybe......?? Our last 'thing' we did as we hopped into Belgium, just 45 minutes or so from Dunkirk.
The Belgian fire service play the last post at the Menin Gates every evening at 2000. Usually a short service and some well thought through words. Often visiting dignitaries........and tonight was the Mayor of Doncaster!!!!

A trip to the town square for dinner, packed with lively Tour de France spectators also hiding out from the rain, yielded a lovely simple Belgian feed of charcuterie and frites.
