Day 1 - Let's go - Gatwick to Athens

By rail to Gatwick on 28th - a leisurely route via Reading and Guildford with a pre-booked hotel which proved useful as cold weather in the UK had closed Edinburgh and Newcastle Airports already. Gatwick was still open but the hotel was busy as connecting flights were cancelled.

My morning flight was for around 9.00 am on 29th and as it …

This morning Emma woke up at 6.00am and went back to sleep after her feed. I had set the alarm for 7.30am and got up when it went off. I had a quick shower, followed by Matt. We didn't wash Emma this morning as I planned to bath her at the hotel tonight.

We got dressed and went to breakfast. The service was pretty poor this morning so …

Sunday morning is not the best time to go shopping, but Kath had to tell me there was an outlet mall (strip mall) not far from her house, 20 min. So we went. She did warn me it was mostly upmarket close, on sale.. which is fine.. but.. the prices were still toooo steep for my liking. Part of the reason we went was because my Annie still didn't have …

What, Where, When and more importantly, WHY?

... lot of people in the excitement, I didn't want rumors spreading especially since I resigned following the pay rise discussion. Pretty much every one was supportive, I was surprised to see how many people had done their own trips and how much advice they would give me. I didn't expect every one to understand my choices, some of the younger engineers see a career as being the only thing that matters, I'd hate to go back to being one of them.

    A good start

With premier Inn you know what to expect so it's a good stop-over before flying. I am never disappointed and the staff maintained their good service in spite of a heavy influx of weary travellors due to cancelled flights

Good value for money airport hotel

    from tsaunders

We stayed at this Premier Travel Inn for 1 night before an early flight. It was £60 room only, which we considered good for the area. The reception was friendly and efficient, the room was clean, and had all the usual facilities that these kinds of travel hotels have. We had an evening meal in the restaurant which was very good, again the service was good, the food was decent quality and there was a good range of options. We did not have breakfast in the morning so cannot comment on that.

If you want to save the £2.50 shuttle bus charge, it is only a 5-10 minute walk from North Terminal, which in turn is only a 2 minute free monorail (Transit) ride from South Terminal. However, the Shuttle bus (which runs every 40 mins for most of the day) is very useful in wet weather or if you are in a rush. You just buy the tickets from the driver when you board.

    It does the job

for £60 it was fine. busy hotel being next to airport.room was spacious and clean and beds comfortable. corridors were quiet even on a saturday night. decent food in downstairs. Very good bus service to airport onluy cost £2.50 so am not sure why person below thought iut was expensive.

    Rubbish! Service with contempt.

This is an awful hotel. I stayed at this hotel on the 12th March and thought it was terrible. The room reminded me of a Youth Hostel as it was austere and cold. It is also very noisy due to other guests leaving for the airport at all hours.

The staff were also rude, arrogant and unhelpful.

At £60.00 a night, I would strongly recommend you look elsewhere as I have previously stayed at the Aurora International for less - this being an outstanding hotel.

    Good nights sleep

Done what was promised I had a good nights sleep. No problems here will stay again if needed too.

    Enjoyed it.

We stayed at Gatwick North on route to Florida last week. We actually wanted South terminal, but as that didn't get very good reviews, we opted to stay at north hotel and use the linking monorail. The hotel was fine. The staff were helpful and upbeat. Food was a little pricey, but you should expect that. The shuttle coach cost £2.50 each per journey and although it is literally a few minutes away, I thought it reasonable for door-to-door pick up. The room was clean, the hotel was very quiet and that was surprising considering it was extremely full. The breakfast was fine, and we found the whole experience very good. This was our first time at staying overnight before travelling and we would do it again in an instant....probably at Premier Travel Inn North.

Classic Example of You Get What You Pay For

    from anonymous

Rooms at this hotel are priced lower than others at Gatwick Airport; however, it is not as good a deal as it seems. The hotel cuts costs and there are many extra charges that make up for the low price. We knew we had chosen the wrong hotel the minute we entered the reception area. There was a very long check-in line. Furthermore, this area was next to the bar's TV lounge. We breathed in more second-hand smoke during our long wait at check-in than we did in our entire week in England. The rooms do not have air-conditioning. This was uncomfortable at the end of April. I wouldn't want to imagine what it would be like during the summer. The beds only had bottom sheets. At every other hotel we stayed at in England the beds had top and bottom sheets. There is a hefty fee to use the airport bus. This was the only location in all of England where I could not make a connection using my MCI phone card in either the bedroom or the public phone. A manager said that I would have to use my credit card or buy one of the hotel's phone cards (both higher rates than on my phone card). Breakfast seemed expensive. At any rate we were in such a hurry to leave this hotel that we wouldn't have bothered to stay for breakfast at any price. To be fair, this is an otherwise well-maintained modern building. The bedroom and bathroom were clean and reasonably spacious. Staff was friendly and apologetic. If not for all the extra fees, we could have accepted this as a low cost hotel for someone who is just looking for a place to sleep - arrive late and leave early. But if you're looking for a memorable experience your last night in England, it's best to find other accommodations at Gatwick.

    Added Costs

    from anonymous

What they don't tell you is that there is a 15 pound charge for early checkin and that "airport security" doesn't allow them to provide a luggage room - this was an added cost as we dropped off our Hertz car and went to spend our last day in London. Because of early check-in, we didn't get a twin but a family room but when we returned at midnight, they hadn't put linens on the second bed. This is the only hotel that charges for a shuttle bus. Only hotel that we stayed in the UK that had a charge for breakfast (7 pounds). The room is comfortable and quiet enough but basically you stay at a hotal that costs 25 pounds more (early check-in, shuttle bus and breakfast) and end up even.

    Okay for overnight

    from anonymous

Great location to Gatwick if you need an early flight out. Although this hotel was adequate for an overnight stay, I would not recommend for any extended London visits. Too much of a hassle/money/time to get into the city, although you can via train. Average/slightly below in all accounts.

    Average place, average service...

    from anonymous

Typical travel inn... nice large comfortable rooms, just without any form of personal touch to them.

Check in went smoothly, though the people in front seemed to take a long time doing so. lack of formal queue meant i was almost queue jumped.

Check out - smooth again. Got down just before 4:45am ready for breakfast - starting at 5am. Alas, though i mentioned to a member of staff i was waiting for breakfast to open, there was no further mention of it, until i asked about 5:15 to find it'd been open for the last 10 minutes. I was waiting for the 5:30 bus to the airport.

(Previous reviewer says it took 45minutes on bus to get to north terminal - can't see this myself - though it would depend on time of day and level of traffic - took us all of 15minutes - which included picking up from another airport and going to south terminal first - my flight left from north terminal).

The one thing, apart from breakfast, that let the place down is the resturant...

It was admittedly a busy night, but over 40minutes from asking to see the desert menu to actually receiving desert is not excusable. Same can be said for being out of the "cheese and buscuits" - my original choice. and then charging me twice for one item - a mistake hastily corrected when the waitress came for money and i said i was waiting for the manager - even though i had not told her why i was waiting.

Average place, good price, crappy service in resturant - but that could just be the one day.

Stay again - probably. Recommend - yes.

    Quite comfortable.

Stayed overnight May 24, 2004. Has non smoking rooms! Comfortable American type hotel, nice after various B & B & small hotels. Weekday rate for double L52.95 (pounds) less on weekend. Water heater with complimentary tea, instant coffee, cocoa & a biscuit in room. Large bath & large room, but we had double that was also a triple. Restaurant/bar in lobby. Very quiet if kept window closed, otherwise heard the shuttle every hour or so. Parking avail. for extra cost. One oddity, bottom sheet & only duvet on top. Top sheet given when I asked at desk. (too warm for duvet). Shuttle pounds 2.50 per person, each way. Took 45 min from hotel to No. Terminal about 1/8 mile as crow flies. Can walk if haven't much luggage. Taxi from No terminal pounds 5.50. Can get email address on web. What with cost of transportation, Le Meridian might be better deal, can walk easily to it from North Terminal.
