... warmth from the blacks extended to us is a testimony to them. This was exactly Nelson Mandela's and Desmond Tutu's desire for reconciliation rather than retaliation.

With our four days at Halcyon House ended, we say good-bye to Caroline (who loaned us her Season 4 DVDs, yea!) and drive 180 miles to Port Elizabeth where a plane will take us another 400 miles to a beach resort in Durban, S.A.

... a proper house. Currently this takes about 11 years (!), a long time but a lot better than around Cape Town, for instance, where 18 years of waiting is not unusual. The new houses are fairly small, but brick, and are free for people on low incomes. One interesting thing to me was that amongst these standard houses are some quite large multi-storey houses; apparently often people who have good jobs and earn decent wages prefer to stay living ...
