I was right about the Sangsom buckets. We all woke (around lunchtime) in a bit of a state but were adamant to see some sights. We grabbed a river taxi along the Chao Phraya River to the Grand Palace. The river taxis are a bit like a Venetian gondola on ecstasy. You're encouraged to wear a life jacket as the one thing these longboats aren't is stable. Fun, just not stable.
