... to tourist info, which was surprisingly helpful – rang to reserve me a cheap room.

Was a pleasant 30 min boat ride, watching the pargliders descend from nearby rocky peaks before arrival in Abraao, overlooked by a parrot's beak shaped peak. Dumped my bag at the first place with a room for 200 or less while I looked for a better deal – the place I had reserved was a bit of a ...

Admittedly it was the first time I had really been on my own since I arrived in Brazil, so I felt a little off. The hostel for the first night was Che Lagarto which is in a great location but just felt a bit sterile to me after the homeliness of Discovery. I did meet some people there but knew they were just to bide the time with rather than become buddies with (except for Blanda from Brazil who was lovely!)

We arrived at rio airport at 7.30am rio time! Collected our bags and hoped that there was a dude with our name waiting for us! There was a dude with 'Ilha Grande. Genes ' written in some paper but no one else. After a quick look around we went up to him and said 'James??' In an inquisitive way. He responded with a 'si si' so we went along with it! We headed into rio catching a glimpse of big Jesus now and then ...

... br> I said cheerio to Vila Casanova and got a transfer to Ilha Grande with green toad bus..... thanks for recommendation Becky! I got picked up at the door at 11am in a smooth friendly transfer to the island. The alternative was a 4am start with taxi, public bus and long ferry journey.

Traveller tip of the day: Speak to local residents, best way to get to know a place.
