Vegas of the East

... before arriving here due to the language and food problems we thought that we might come across. In the end both of these proved to be unfounded as apart from a few occasions we managed to get ourselves understood and we ate pretty healthily. China is a fascinating place, it is so big and diverse both geographically and economically. On a typical day we would see people working hard in the rice paddies and then later see huge Mercedes or BMW's ...

Sao Paulo ruins

... When I reached the façade, I looked back at the city, its narrow streets and the throngs of tourists climbing the steps behind me. From the top everything below looked small.

We walked behind the façade to find it carefully reinforced with steel and designed with a viewing platform integrated into the supports, which provided another view over the town through an opening in the ...

Day 19: Macau

... which delayed us even further. Our tickets were for the 9 am ferry, but we got to the ferry station in about 20 minutes, so we boarded the 8:45 ferry by stand by; I guess we didn't need to get up so early in the first place. Before our excursion, I was unaware that Macau was a mini Las Vegas in every way possible: they even had a Venetian Hotel! However, our first stop was the University of Macau, where we would be taken on a tour of the campus and ...

Sic Bo or Bust

... The next roll is Big Numbers!!! That makes me feel even worse!

As I leave, I notice this table had become really, really crowded. Irene later tells me people wanted to gamble at the table because I was white. After all the fun and losing what I had gained the night before, we head back to the airport. Bye Bye Macau. This was a good time and full of surprises. Not nearly as crazy as Vegas, but very cool.

Macau Baby!!! Gamble your face off!

... going to lose their job. Fortunately, it wasn’t pointing at anyone. So, a few beers later and a full belly. We call it a night. I would talk about the casino at the Grand Waldo, but it’s not worth it. If you go to Macau, do not gamble there unless that is all you want to do. It is small, has only a few tables and its very quiet. One other thing – no free drinks and drinks are EXPENSIVE. Tomorrow – HONG KONG!

Two Days One Night in Macau

... Western food in Macau is characterized by the styles of Portugal, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asian Countries. Since Macau was ruled by the Portuguese for over 400 years, it influenced the food culture quite deeply. Therefore, the most representative of local food is Portuguese Cuisine and people who visit Macau should never miss it. Portuguese food in ...

... Lighthouse and Fortress which stands in the Hill of Guia. Along the pedestrian Path in the Hill, you will see people jogging, doing exercise and kids playing in those exercise equipment. Ahead is the Guia Cable car, then walk again until you reach the Fortress. On top of it, you will find the Lighthouse and beside the lighthouse is the baroque chapel of Our Lady of Guia (btw, the guard there again is a Filipino;) )... Next time, maybe we'l visit more of the Churches....

Randomness

Not to much going on with work being the predominant factor of life here in Hong Kong. The weather has become pretty darn warm and the humidity makes it that much more joyous to be here. Showers have come and gone, "squally thunderstorms" come and go but it doesn't do much to cool the area down. Stepping out of the building where the flat is the first sensation can closely ...

... you are a hundred miles from the fumes and congestion of Hong Kong, though in reality it is only a 30min ferry ride. about half way through the hike you come to a beach, which is beautifully clean and which has an enclosed area for swimming. I spent my afternoon just listening to the waves - and also massaging my ankle, which appears to have swollen for some reason. After the beach the trail gets a little ...

People's Republic of China

... Irish and Australian bars...it was the most unlikely place for all of these people to be together, but they were all united by the simple lifestyle and appreciation for the mountains. Hopefully one day I'll go back to Yangshu and spend a week there...or a couple...or maybe longer. That night we went out to see what Guilin had to offer. We asked our guide to take us to a local restaurant and then asked her to eat with us. She quickly and vehemently refused and looked pretty ...
