Just when we thought Venice was the most beautiful place we would visit in Italy, Varenna may have beaten it into second place. Neither of us can get our heads round the fact that we are actually seeing what's around us. The apartment is amazing and the views from the balcony alone are worth the trip. Claire has also befriended a blind cat so we keep having to think of excuses to go and see the lady so Claire can rub the cat.

We drove from Moneglia through stoneblock-lined, one-way tunnels built right on the edge of the coast. A real engineering feat! Once through to Genoa, we turned north on the Autostrada towards Milan and then onto Lake Como.
Checking into our B&B early, we walked out into the old city, which was just 5 minutes away from the former convent the B&B is located in.

Yes - a letter sent on the Inaugral Sydney to Southampton Flying Boat Air Mail service of 1938! So Lake Como all of a sudden was feeling quite attached to the flying boat jouney, if not geographically then at least historically!
