      Neuschwanstein Castle

A travel blog entry by jlmcclure on Oct 27, 2014

Up and about at 7am and after some brekky we took a taxi to Hauptbahnhof (Central Station), where we started our tour to King Ludwig's castle. It is believed this castle is the idea behind Walt Disney's Snow White castle. The castle is quite a way out of Munich so off we go. First onto a train with our guide and our 7 other tour people, all English speaking, good start! We were on the first train for about 15 mins and then we were all ushered off and onto another train for about ...

... not that there's anything wrong with that). But Ludwig dreamed of living in a "real" medieval castle, so when he became king, he began building Neuschwanstein. Anyone who knows what "real" medieval castles looked like knows that Ludwig missed a few history lessons- and the project bankrupted him along the way. He was on track to bankrupt the entire Bavarian kingdom as well, until his court conveniently decided to declare him "insane," ...

For being as much in the countryside as it is, with a constant stream of tourists from all over the world there certainly was no shortage of crowds. As you could guess the castle is a ways up the hill, so we opted to take a horse drawn carriage to the top for ...

Zugspitz - the highest peak in Germany

... The free WIFI at the waiting room saved us from the boring wait. We got to our hotel in Garmisch (MERCURE) at 5:30pm. Dinner was served at 6pm. I fell asleep on the bus on the way to the hotel. I must have been tired.

Dinner: Ball ball soup; cream chicken rice with broccoli (chicken was tough and cream was alright). Dessert was berries with cream.

... of the castle and another castle named faxxx something that was never built. I found Ludwig II to be a talented designer. But he probably wasn't well-liked at his time.

The descent from the castle back to the car park was long. Mom and I left late so there were no horse-carriages. Other tour mates were able to ride the carriages. There was a couple behind us who also didn't make the carriages and they were 15 minutes late going to the bus.
