... exited from, so when we turned left and walked for half an hour up the road, we ended up a long way from where I had intended. It was only the road signs that said we were heading for Austria that made me suspect we'd very probably got lost.

After determining from the map where we really were - out in the rather grey Cold War residential district - I worked out a route back without having to retrace our steps, which was interesting as it was very ...

... and raining intermittently, the scenery was still incredibly beautiful. One small town that looked especially interesting was Bad Gastein (Austria), which had the appearance of a somewhat posh spa and resort town.

The train was "split" in Villach and another engine was connected for the trip into Slovenia. During the 15 minute wait in Villach, several passengers ran down the aisle yelling loudly, but I didn't realize at the time what that was all ...

... lunch. The first was a dried pear dumpling (kvočevi nudlni) with a sweet raisin and walnut sauce, and the second was a spring roll type shell but it had cheese and pine nuts inside, and sesame sauce and hot sauce on top- that was especially amazing. The receptionist at the hostel recommended going on a free walking tour which was really well done - it didn't go far but in 2.5hours we saw a lot of the old town and heard about Ljubljana ...

... up in the striking and beautiful Presernov Trg square. We walked in and out of the amazing antique shops and took in all the quirky sights and sounds of Metalkova, a former Yugoslavia communist jail which has been turned into an artists’ playground by day and come night a pub and nightclub hangout. We finished all this exploring in the Tivoli Gardens, the greenest and biggest of the many gardens located all over the city.
