Travel Blogs by Travelers Who Stayed at the Poseidon Athens

We landed!

Call it day one. We flew into Athens almost without event. The airline neglected to order vegetarian meals for my daughter Reyla and myself. So, we found ourselves inadvertently trying out the fasting to ameliorate jet lag theory. So far, so good. Except for the really bad cold I now have. Spent a day doing nothing much on the beach. The temperatures are around 32C. Nice. The hotel pool has a bar. Tomorrow we'll get up early and make the trek to the Acropolis. I might even figure out how to d...

Some days, the museums close early

And Wednesday is one of the days the National Museum in Athens closes early. So, as it turns out, are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And holidays. In fact, Monday is the only day it stays open past 3pm. But then it opens only at 1pm on Mondays. It's good to know this before making the 45minute trip by tram and metro to see it and arriving at 3:20. Fortunately, the outdoor cafe, O Kipos Mouseiou (The Museum Garden) stays open and it provides really good sandwiches and frappes ...

Athens and the Acropolis

... d been eyeing and we sat in the shade on a step. Our last stop was to the new Acropolis museum built within site of the Acropolis. Apparently it was quite controversial going up based on the location, but I thought it was incredible. It opened in June, so for all of 2009 it is only one Euro. I would have paid more. There are glass panels on the floor and you can see excavations below the museum ...

How to Beat the Heat in Greece

... essential, and she is totally right. Trust me, you will keel over if you don't wear one while walking outdoors. - Soak the sunhat in cold water before going out. - Have frequent cold showers. - Take a bandana, get it wet, whirl it around in the air to get it cold, and tie it around your neck. When it warms up, whirl it around again. - Take lots of water wherever you're walking. I can't believe how much I went through. Get one of those ...

Athens

... mad rush through the famous National Archeological Museum and ancient sites. Athens is mostly flat and lies in the valley of a mountain range that can be seen off in the distance, but there are several hills in the city, most having ancient ruins and monuments, that provide great vantage points and views of the sunset and surrounding hillsides. I visited the local University in Athens, expecting to see a massive and impressive education system ...

Ruined On Ruins

... with amazing sculptures, pottery, reliefs, and relics from Ancient Greek life. Among the more stunning peices was a giant bronze statue of Zeus that was recovered from the sea, and an intricatly worked wreath of golden flowers and leaves. There was also an amazing device that they recovered from the sea that they x-rayed. They've done an attempt at reconstructing it and figure it was basically some nautical ...

Aix- Last Day

... and other sights- public sites where the money goes directly to the town. It must be hard to find the balance of living in a constant mix of 'this is my home, my neighborhood' and 'this is a tourist attraction'. Ah well. Made it to the train. I'll mix Aix. I liked the town itself (physically), the people somewhat less. Like any town, in any country, any where, when overwhelmed with tourists it has to close inward and tighten ranks I suppose. I am sure any visitor to ...

... Agora. It is a small acre of ruins. I have chosen today to see most of the Ancient ruins of Athens because they are free. We wander around the ruins taking in the history of the Roman Agora. www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PmX4wzj48Y One of the few remains left behind by Turkish invasion stands next to the Roman Agora, the beautiful Victory Mosque. The view of the Acropolis from here is beautiful, but the view of ...
