Excited as I was to see more Patagonian nature, and due to the fact that I'd already visited that lake the previous day, I declined and stuck with hiking plans. It was one of those decisions that seems a little fateful in hindsight. I took the bus out to the town of Llao Llao about an hour away. Your luggage is scanned when arriving in and all fresh food is confiscated - ...

... and ostrich-like birds which are determined to cross at exactly the wrong time, over a bumpy gravel track to another odd town, Tres Lagos (something of a misnomer since lagos means lake and it's some distance from anything resembling water). At 8pm we finally arrived in El Chalten. It's smaller than Bariloche but gives the same impression of a quaint ski village and has a spectacular setting, placed at the foot of the looming Mount Fitz Roy (Fitz Roy being the first person to reach the top). ...
