Well...Day 2 hasn't gone quite according to plan, but that's not to say it hasn't been fun. There was quite alot of rain overnight so we decided against climbing the volcano. Instead, I wandered around for a few hours in the early morning before meeting Jennifer for a walking tour with Elizabeth Bell, one of the leading authorities on Antigua. It was a really great tour...much more than "and this is yet another church that was destroyed by an earthquake". In the afternoon we were supposed to ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala littleengineHard to believe that day 3 is already here - and almost over, for that matter. Finishing up from yesterday´s rushed post, yesterday morning´s walking tour with Elizabeth Bell was one of the highlights of the trip, giving us more insight into the history of the people, government, etc... than we ever would have gotten on our own. The afternoon wasn´t quite as interesting, though... the Coffee Plantation tour we were supposed to take left earlier than we were told it would so we didn´t make it....
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala littleengineWell, I made it safe and sound to Guatemala, but my luggage did not! Since we are only here until tomorrow morning (and only 5 am at that!) I was a tad worried. But fortunately, it made it here today and all is well. I went for a brief tour of some of the nearby villages and historic churches this morning with three other members of the GAP group. I had originally booked a city tour, but the only available guide had apparently double booked or something, so the village tour it was! It helps n...
Antigua, Guatemala meezermanI did the Elizabeth Bell city tour in the morning which was great, she didn't show us the whole way around town which is what you might expect of a city tour but what I loved about it was that we learnt about the politics, economics and culture of Guatemala, Antigua and the Mayas. I found it fascinating as I didn´t know much before hand. Whilst walking down the street looking for a place for lunch I heard the familiar sound of salsa, drawn to it I followed the noise and found it coming out of...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala salsitaHello One and All! Well after nearly 30 hours of travelling, lots of time zone changes and not a lot of sleep ive made it! The flights were fine, on the way to LA we flew over Salt Lake City and the whole area was snowy and frozen, it looked lovely, and you could definately tell when we flew over Las Vegas and Los Angeles! Then flying into Guatemala was really pretty, the tops of volcanoes (active and no longer active) poking through the clouds, its very lush and green and mountainous. I got ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala tess.johnson... chariot but who’s owner was more than happy for the business.

Finally after two hours of torturous climbing the volcano we could feel a hot breeze and steam rising from the rocks. We had arrived at the lava and there were plenty of people with marshmallows on sticks, and a few of them jumped back in surprise when their sticks and marshmallows caught on fire. I sat on a rock for a while and after which I noticed that the bottoms of my shoes had melted and the metal in my belt ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala shanemilli... just had a rather frightening experience in the pitch black loo.

We arrived in Flores at 7am and were immediately offered a free taxi to ‘Los Amigos’ the hostel which came highly recommended.

Lessons learnt – ‘English clean’ and ‘Guatemala clean’ are different things. In Guatemala clean is if it doesn’t come off with your fingernail…. The mug Jon gave me to drink my beer out of was not Guatemala clean.

Antigua, Guatemala mymzyI wonder some times if Mexico does certain things just to **** people off. Entering MX you need a vehicle registration which says that you will not sell or leave the vehicle in MX. So, you need to cancel the permit when you LEAVE MX. Any person with some common sense would think "Hey, why don't we put the office at the borders?" Nope, they put it in the city thats 30 mins back in ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala macrosse1... of the mountain. Our child guide, stayed out front and only stopped once to rest. Even the young gals among us were complaining at the pace. I was dead last, huffing and puffing, and cursing (not under my breath, as no one could hear anything with the wind howling and screaming in your ears) I shot a short video segment attached here. It should give you some feel for the moment just short of the sumit. The group got out and up ahead of me but I ...
