      New Years in Antigua

... entered through the door of a mini fridge. There was great live music every night, and some really good mescal s*************tails. We went there for the first time on New Year's Eve, and then every night after that. You can't have too much of a good thing.

And speaking of good things, Brett, an old friend from college, and his mate Tait were in Antigua at the same time as us, so we had a couple of extra Aussies on hand for poorly accented Spanish countdowns. Sam ...

      Saying goodbye

This morning was sad as we had to say good bye to our families and I am so glad we got the chance to do another home stay because if we had only done the first one I would've been a tad disappointed. So we walked back down the hill to the little boat and got our ride back across the lake. The ride from Lanquin to Antigua was long and not the most comfortable of mini buses, but other than that ...

A walk in the volcano park - Pacaya

... passengers that got picked up in their mini van, and we all pile into a Chicken Bus! Unexpected! It's a dedicated Chicken Bus to go straight up to Pacaya, no stopping. But everyone thought they were going to be taken to Pacaya in their pickup mini van, as did I.  Clean toilets are available at the top when you get dropped off, so use them.  After paying entrance fee, we all walk together wi our Guide and a pack of men with horses yelling "Taxi? Taxi!". It is ...

Which volcano shall I look at?!

... booked a hike up Pacaya - the most accessible of the nearby volcanoes - and wandered around the very pleasant colonial surroundings of Antigua. As it is such a hive of volcanic and tectonic activity, there are plenty of old ruins to check out, and the Parque Central is a beautiful old square. Fun fact: Antigua used to be the capital of Guatemala (its third) but in the 1700s it got smashed to bits by an earthquake so they moved the capital down the ...
