Beautiful Antigua

Hola Everyone! Another beautiful day in paradise here. My little room at the Posade de la Merced is cuter than you could imagine. The trip from Guatemala City yesterday was longer than expected, much road construction slowed us down. Finally arrived in Antigua around 4 or 5, found a great little place to have some food close to the hotel. Following the suggestion of a fellow traveler I met on the shuttle I caught a tuk-tuk later and went to a place called Mono Loco (crazy monkey). The advice ...

Giant Kite Festival sans wind (Andy)

... caution to the wind. We ordered some type of meat with tortillas and veggies and a side of Gallo to wash it down. Im not going to say that I wasnt a little bit nervous. but i figured that if I was going to get sick at least all of us would be sick together. Also, on a random note, they had blue corn which pretty much blew my mind, for some reason, even though ive had blue tortilla chips, i could not wrap my ...

4 weeks of Spanish studies and now...

... Maribel, of not giving me any challenges or making it too easy for me. That has really been something I have appreciated. Maribel and I got along very well, had a lot of laughs all the while she maintained a good balance between praising me and pointing to areas, where I had to focus more. I suppose I did around 1½-2 hours of homework every afternoon, including the time it took me to try to sum up all the grammar rules in a little Word document. The school does not ...

LAVA!!!! MALTEN MAGMA!!! UNFORGETTABLE!!!

... utterly amazing and never before expected in my life, a river of flowing lava. I sat sweating on a rock for a good deal of time and stared at the bright red stream that was surreal to be seeing. The river then overflowed and a second stream began slowly making it’s way down another ditch ...

Volcano's are hot, hot, hot.

Shane says:

We arrived in Guatemala city in the afternoon and took a bus directly to Antigua as recommended by some travellers we met along the way who had less than savoury things to say about the capital. Judging by the slums we later passed in the mini bus it seemed like good advice.

As soon as we left the airport we were mugged by people trying to sell us mini bus tickets to Antigua. They were shoving each other and promising us that the person that offered us the $5 ...

Antigua News Update 1

... There's a definite Mayan presence here in the dozens of artesanal markets and shops, although it feels quite disneyfied. Anyones parents would love this place. Active Volcan Pacaya, over an hour away, is one of Antigua's most popular day trips, drawing hundreds of visitors daily with the promise of roasting marshmallows over its flowing lava. I'd seen friends photos so set off accordingly enthusiastic about ...

Pacaya, climb the active volcano!

... b three young women, and a great guy from Montenegro. His name was Voyo Knezevic. He lives in NYC and works in a Basque restaurant in the West Village. It was Voyos first time on a horse. He was a real enthusiast, had a great spirit. The women walked behind our two horse caravan as we climbed upward. We finally reached a ridge where we could look across a valley covered in black lava. We then had to dismount, and slide down a long hillside of scree ...
