Hola Everyone! Another beautiful day in paradise here. My little room at the Posade de la Merced is cuter than you could imagine. The trip from Guatemala City yesterday was longer than expected, much road construction slowed us down. Finally arrived in Antigua around 4 or 5, found a great little place to have some food close to the hotel. Following the suggestion of a fellow traveler I met on the shuttle I caught a tuk-tuk later and went to a place called Mono Loco (crazy monkey). The advice ...
Antiuga, Guatemala nctraveler... test is tomorrow so I´ll check back in to let you know how positive im feeling then.
On a more personal note, things here are going really well. Our host family is tremendously patient and accomodating (more on them later), everyone at the school is relaxed yet professional (more later) and we are keeping extremely busy with random actividads. I hope to write a more descriptive ...
... changed pants and shirt and then Mario showed me around. We walked to the Central Square 5 blocks from here and then he showed to the offices of the school. I had asked him whether I should pay him that day, meaning giving him payment for the airport ride. However, he wanted me to pay for the entire 4 weeks of tuition including homestay up front. Naturally, I did not carry that amount of dollars on me, and was also surprised that it should ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala chrisser71... The way down was as treacherous as the way up (although less tiring…) and we made it back down by 12.
So the time has come to leave central America and head back to the little island across the pond. Several things make me think we’re about ready to come home – the fact that both of our sets of sunglasses are held together with steri-strips (good old Occy Health’s travel pack), Half of our wardrobe has been rendered unwearable ...
... the entire town's debris rushing down the hill to the lake.
It must have been Mother Nature's time for revenge, because on May 2, we lived through earthquake number five and, at 6.1 on the Richter Scale, probably our biggest for the trip at that point. We were woken in the late morning by our bed and room shaking and dashed out to the foyer ...
... price. Our guide, Aldo, met us at the store along with a half dozen kids selling walking sticks for 5Q. Eventually, after some haggling most of the group were able to get a stick for 2-3Q. Once everyone got the required equipment, we started our trek.
Aldo's goal was to have everyone up to the lava flow early enough to enjoy the spectacle and loiter awhile, but he wanted the group off the sharp unstable fresh lava ...
... I can´t even begin to dream of the amazing experiences I´ll have, and I feel that it´s simply impossible to return the same person from something like this. Yeah, I´m a bit nervous. But I know by now that a feeling of nervousness often precedes the most amazing experiences in life, and I´m sure this is no exception. Thanks everyone for everything. Drop me a line sometime, I´ll be checking my email every few days. Take care, Jay
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala jaynichvolodov... up and told us to follow them. They drove us, lights flashing, through the city and directly to the front door of the hotel. They got out, introduced us to the front door staff and asked that they take good care of us - the hotel staff gave us one of their best rooms... We stayed a few days in Guatemala City, Monday morning we brought the BMW to the BMW dealer and set up for its 12000 mile service and repairs of little things that have broken along the ...
Guatemala, Guatemala courtrand... I relaxed and finally got to clean my rucksack and clothes and dry it all properly in the baking sun of the day. No more shrimps for me for a while. Francisco wrote his thesis. We drank good local coffee, went on a coffee tour and visited the famous colourful market at Chichicastenango. I took time out from the other three studious people and went to Antigua for a few days where Mohamed was semi-living. It was so nice to be in a town after weeks and weeks ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala bigtripThe afternoon activity was to visit Tienda Ama. They make dolls dressed in native costumes and also sell coffee, bags, shawls, etc. It was pretty nice I will probably go there again some time. Afterwards the group had planned to go to Cafe Luna whose hours are posted as from 9 AM - 8 PM, but it was closed. So we went to a Taqueria across the street ...
