Dolores Hidalgo - day 15

Hello friends, Getting to be a pattern here, two days in a city. The small town of Dolores Hidalgo has proven to be an interesting place, worthy of exploration. Dolores is where the Mexican independence movement began in earnest. Here on September 16, 1810, Miguel Hidalgo, the parish priest, rang the bells and issued the Grito de Dolores to the assembled. He exhorted the people to overthrow the Spanish-born overlords who ruled Mexico. The revolution spread but was put down and the leaders exe...

... bus), most of which was spent driving round in circles arguing where the motorway was and establishing that the Arizona bound road was not the way we wanted. We made it back eventually though and spent the evening in Nubu- the finest bar in Guasave and run by my new cousin-in-law, Raul. The whiskey (and vodka. oh, and gin) flowed freely (literally, hurrah!) and we danced to modern latin pop hits bellowing words I didnīt know at the top of my voice.

El Fuerte - The birthplace of Zorro

... of our tour. (Gareth lost interest in continuing so I'm finishing this one off) The next morning we set out on a river cruise and hike. The boats can only be described as 'Mexican ingenuity' with a simple row boat with plastic bbq chairs having been screwed into the boat. We set out and it feels like we are cruising our way down the Waikato river in New Zealand. It's peaceful and there's loads of birdlife that Phillipe our guide is pointing out ...

A foreigner in El Fuerte

... it's pretty hot here as I have now descended from the altitude of Creel which naturally keeps it cooler. There don't seem to be any other guests at the Hotel where I am staying , which is a little weird (for budgetary reasons its somewhat less celubrious than the Posada del Hidalgo to say the least, which may be at least partly the explanation). Tomorrow I catch the bus to Mazatlan as I start to head South.

Feliz Navidad...

... yellow, green and red lights, the soundtrack to this scene playing in my mind "I wanna wish you a merry christmas from the bottom of my heart...". For a moment, I am transported to somewhere in the South West of australia, driving in an ageing Holden of some description, the music alternating between the 3 B's: Boney M, the Bee Gees and Billy Joel. The moment is short-lived however, as I'm thrust ...

... in Cancun. A little pricey, but goood value. Very nice. TV, Sleep, Taxi, Airport, Taxi, and here we are! Mexico City: one of the largest (if not the largest) city in the world. I hear conflicting stories. Flaco said 26-27 million. The guy in the cab says 22 and more like 35 in the greater metropolitan area. Internet research reveals quite different and also conflicting info. One site has a census (of just the city) saying it is only 8.2 million ...

... minutes of talking in the airport we realized that we had planned the same exact trip to the exact dates and agreed to travel together. Gleefully we decided to head to the barrio of Coyoacan for dinner and fun. Our evening begin with the witnessing of an Aztec energy rising ritual not all that far from Fridaīs house. Over a dinner of alemeda con pastor and pina we found that we were completing each others thoughts and spoke excitedly ...

Raining Inside the Restaurant???

... at a local Italian restaurant. (That's right...we ate Italian food in Mexico...think what you want, but the brushetta was REALLY good). Just as I was about to start my meal, out of the corner of my eye I saw something fall from the second story above us (we were in an open patio type area). Rain??? Not again, I hoped. I watched for a minute and nothing else...weird. Then again, I was just about to consume the first forkfull of my meal and I saw it AGAIN! This ...

El Fuerte

We decided to get off here instead of going through to Los Mochis mainly to see a smaller town, and also because we didn't want to arrive in a new town without accommodation booked at midnight! Discovered a nice little scam in this town which was disappointing. The train station is several kilometres (7?) out of EF. Some accommodation scouts from a new hostel were at the station and after talking to them we decided to give them a go, especially as they had a nice ...

... flag I have ever seen in it. I had a bit of a wander round the Cathedral and failed miserably at getting into some ruins - I could see them but just couldn't work out where the entrance was! I also went into a museum which had some rather odd exhibits, including a room all about the history of dentistry, where there were some pretty scary looking implements!! The following day I felt a bit more confident and got the metro to the Museum of Anthropology - it was so ...
