Tambopata National Reserve, Amazon Basin

7/9/08 "I arrived yesterday in Puerto Maldonado where the presence of the national strike was already apparent. At the airport, police kept all passengers from all flights on the airport grounds until all flights came in. The last flight in was mine at around 1230pm and after situating which luggage would stay in the town (as we could only carry a small bag on the boat to the reserve) all buses full of all of the airportīs passengers lined up and formed a huge caravan escorted by national pol...

Amazone Jungle

Farewell to the jungle

... There was about 20 of them staying for 3 weeks so the lodge seemed much busier than usual. Two more volunteers turned up too, Lisa and Steve who had read my blog before deciding to come to the jungle! It had never occured to me that people other than family or friends would read this so that came as a bit of a suprise. They were really nice and so enthusiastic, we went out on a few walks together and it was nice to get to know them.

I cant really ...

Latest Jungle News

... Yasmin (second in the line) rushed over and I hurried along last...it was an armadillo but in the few precious seconds before I got there it got spooked and ran away! I didnt see it!! So close. I would have gone off the trail to try and see it but it had inconveniently chosen the densest part of the rainforest to run in and I had no chance. I kept repeating my favourite mantra it´s not a zoo" (interspersed with several expletives) but it was hard to hide my disappointment ...

Its a jungle out there...

... We (us 4 Resident Naturalists and 1 volunteer) hiked up there in time to watch the sunset and string our hammocks up in the hide overlooking the lake. Then once it was pitch black we climbed in the catamaran and paddled out around the lake. With 4 of us to row and 1 person to spot it meant we could do the whole lake in a night. We set out around 6pm and it wasnt long until we saw our first caiman. A black one floating in the water, eyes shining in the spotlight. It is a completely ...

Welcome to the Jungle...

... spiders or the possiblity of encountering puma or jaguar on the trails but the fear of getting lost was very real when I first arrived as I have never been blessed with a great sense of direction. You can walk a couple of metres away from the trail and turn around a few times and get utterly lost the rainforest is so dense. Now I have walked some trails by myself though I am getting used to them and I feel more relaxed, well most of the time! The mud certainly takes a bit of ...

Ripped off at Tambopata

... When I asked he said I was on the wrong tour and would not be going to see them. I´m ****** off!!!! DAY 2 I slept on it and the answer was easy I just change to the other programe and if it costs a few bucks more I will pay the balance. I asked Daniel ´how much to see the macaws´ He went and asked the manager and came back ´$300us¨ WHAT THE F*&K. I have already paid $460us and they want $300 more that is extortion. That would be well over $1100 aus for 4 DAYS. It was ******* rain ...

From the Depths of the Amazon Basin

... filled the air. Abundant beautiful flowers, vines falling to the ground from the branches above, and green, green forest. I didn't know there were so many different shades of green. The humidity was high - so high in fact that Sarah said she thought it was neat that we could taste the air. We saw a couple monkeys up high in the trees on the hike to the lodge, and we saw toucans, egrets and capybaras (the largest rodents in the world ...

The Amazon Jungle

... I should mention that our group included a French couple, a pair of Spanish sisters, and a family of five from Vancouver. The visit to the botanical gardens is not even worth the time it took me to write this sentence. The next morning we were off to the Rio Gamitana for a short walk through the jungle, some fishing and some swimming in some piranha and caiman invested waters. This was a really fun day as there ...

Welcome to the jungle, we´ll have fun and games

... all flocking down to eat the clay and look for potential mates. We were too far away to get any decent pictures, but did manage to see the birds really clearly through the telescope. After we´d watched the parrots for a while we headed off back to the lodge, taking a few detours around the forest. Then, just as it was getting dark, Tilman stopped us. It took us a few minutes to realise what he had spotted, but then we heard the tell-tale sounds, and as we looked ...
