Porto de Galinhas

... Then first was also cool- only the enooooooooormous anchors and some burnt wood left of a galleon from hundreds of years ago. Quite a lot of current that day though, which was tiring. One diver got bit by what they called a ´remora´ in Portuguese. They usually follow sharks or rays and don´t have much fear, very inquisitive. Quite funny. Unfortunately didn´t see any turtles or rays which I really ...

Update - Better Late than Never

... day anyways! So two weeks ago in Nova Hartz there was another party called Festival Ridiculo. Basically this was a huge dress-up rave. When I say huge I mean HUGE (for a small town). There were so many people in the streets downtown, that traffic was being stopped in the roads. The entire group including one of our supervisors, Emilie, dressed up for the rave. Luckily for me, my camera is still missing (not that I expect to ever find it again) so none of you will ever see ...

A quick update

... this city is not a great representation of the entire country. Anyways while in Porto Alegre I got to see Harry Potter and Transformers, in English!!!! Both I must say were great movies. Portuguese is starting to become a lot easier. I can understand the general idea most of the time when people are speaking, which is a big relief. My work project is going great and the kids are really cool. Next weekend is our mid-project for our ...

Floripa

Got the overnight bus from Foz and arrived in Florianapolis (Floripa) on Sunday morning (Ciarans birthday). Barra de Lagao where we were staying and where Conor lives is about an hour away from the city. Our room wasn`t ready when we got there so we went for a walk on the beach, which was only a couple of metres from our accommodation. The beach was packed as it is the summer season and it was the weekend - we stood ...

Ribeirao da Ilha

Ribeirao da Ilha is a town on the West coast of the Island. Without beaches, it is largely a more local area. I take the bus to the most southern end of the road. It hugs the coastline with homes only 2 or 3 deep from the coast and fishing boats spread out everywhere. Beautiful! I explore a couple of towns including Ribeirao da Ilha ...

Lagoinha do Leste to Matadeiro

I awake to watch the sunrise. Peacefulness only broken by nature with its lapping waves, songs of the birds ... By 7 AM, some surfers are up to catch the waves (they appear to be most of the campers). My breakfast is a ham and cheese sandwich, the same as for dinner, but I have the added treat of some yogurt and juice. I did not want to deal with renting and carrying cooking supplies for 1 night. My ...

Pantano do Sul to Lagoinha do Leste

Lagoinha do Leste is the most beautiful of the beaches. It is isolated and undeveloped. I am going to hike there and camp. The bus takes me as far south as it goes to a fishing village Pantano do Sol. I look for a café on the water that has something other than seafood. Each one has only chicken Milanese. I give up and make that my big meal before the hike. Thatched roof, rustic feel. It takes me awhile to find the path since it is ...

A Bittersweet Week

Other travellers had warned us about the perils of driving on Brazil's highways. The major national freeway heading north up the coast from Rio, the BR 101, had frequently been described as a living nightmare. It certainly is in terrible shape, with frequent oversized potholes, and is jam-packed with legions of heavy trucks breathing down your neck, impatient to pass in spite of obstructed views and solid yellow lines. Luckily, we have so far largely managed to avoid this ...

Relaxing

Paradise 60 km from Recife We decided to remove another day in Recife from our plans and we wanted to go to Porto de Galinhas. A very nice beach 60 km in the south of Recife. In fact it is very touristic with many small hotels and pousadas and many shopping possibilities. You can spend a lot of time in this shops ...

ADVENTURE IN PERNAMBUCO?

... dull guy. (Just kidding, Brandon!) These ants were leaf-cutter ants. Found in Central and South America, they take apart plants piece by piece, sometimes leaving nothing of the plant after only hours. I observed the big, dark maroon ants, and, I must say, I wasn't too impressed with their efficiency. In five minutes, the only time I saw an ant actually take a piece of a plant, he dropped it far to the ground after only two seconds. Nevertheless, I did observe an assembly line-type ...
