Port Fairy - start of the Great Ocean Road

As it's not too far from Melbourne, we decided to hire a car for 3 days to drive the Great Ocean Road - something that's on my travel hit list. This morning we left Melbourne early and it took us about 4 hours to drive to Port Fairy down the Princes Highway which is the boring but fast way to get to our starting point for the Great Ocean Road. We stopped down the road in Warnambool for lunch but as it's Mother's Day here in Oz it was absolutely packed! Still - not in too much of a rush so it ...

Coonawarra nach / to Port Fairy

Eigentlich wollten wir die Inlandsstrasse von Coonawarra nach Port Fairy fahren, aber wir hatten ein "kleines Reifenproblem". Es ist der 2. April, daher also wirklich kein Aprilscherz.

Apollo Bay to Port Fairy (seriously, Port Fairy)

... when we drove down into it, the incredibly fine layers of the rocky walls and lush vegetation were quite stunning. There was, however, a dearth of kangaroos. A continual disappointment for me in Australia, is that whenever I have a trip planned that strays from a metropolitan area, every Australian I know promises knowingly, 'Oh, you'll see plenty of 'roos down there.' (They do call them 'roos'). I never do. There are never plenty of 'roos' down ...

Crusing down the Great Ocean Road and Halls Gap

... although the sky was still dull and low clouds hung in the sky, making it difficult for us to get any good snaps of some of the spectacular sights along the way; and needless to say there was no hope of us sunbathing or swimming in the (shark infested) sea. The drive does not disappoint though. Miles and miles of winding roads lined by scrub and trees, nothing but the swells of the Southern ocean crashing into the rocks and beaches beside us. One of ...

PORT FAIRY Day 1

... a cold drink with ice to help his evergrowing lip. We made plans to meet Brad Sholl here tomorrow so we could take advantage of the cheap meals. Thurs Dec 4th Slept brilliantly. Might have had something to do with the alcohol I had the previous night!! Was allowed coffee at my fav. place, we met Simone McCLuskey (Daves daughter, who is living on a farm in Port Fairy) there. We sent the kids to pay and they returned with too much change, so Greg went ...

Sydney- here I come!

... and a bunch of other cool stuff showing Victoria/Melb as it was back in the day. Also, we finally booked our greyhound ticket, which will take us right up to Cairns. So that is one thing sorted anyways! I've heard so-so things about the OzExperience, so we decided against it. Well.. that is it in a nutshell! I know I've been really bad updating, so hopefully now that we'll be doing more exciting things, I'll be able to update with more interesting stories more often!! X

And they're off.... THE ITINERARY

... HOME TIME!! Arrive Melbourne 5:30 am Home again, home again, jiggity jig. After all that, I think we might need a break and a chance to catch our breath. I'm a bit nervous how I'll go, being away for so long - especially since I'm such a home body. But then, there's a big wide world out there just waiting to be explored......

The Great Ocean Road

... undercarriage! After checking out the Foreshore Promenade we rode back to the car, made ourselves some lunch - vegemite sandwiches, naturally! - then sat on the hill eating & planning our next move for the day. We officially hit the GOR, and our main aim for the day was to reach Apollo Bay. Despite being only 165km, it was along really windy roads & was going to take a fair bit of time. Add to that all the exciting stops along the way, and we ...
