Meeting an old friend in a strange land

... she hears horrible stories told by the applicants, and there is a lot of traveling, between DC, where the home office is, and different parts of the world (next site is in Africa); and there is not much chance for sightseeing.

Well, certainly there isn’t much to see here. But the place is not what I envisioned: I thought Mae Sot, a border town that said to have a lot of illegal cross-border trades (including human ...

Finding a Purpose

... of Mae Sot, stopping briefly in several towns along the way. Phitsanulok had to be my worst night of the trip so far. The noise went on for the entire night, and it was so hot that I went under the cold water shower at least ten times during the night - but it would only cool me down for ten minutes or so.

After arriving in Mae Sot, I went in search of Thant (a Burmese refugee) to ask whether there might be any volunteer work ...

Off to Mae Sot

... on anything interesting...there were quite a few gold and jewellery shops with lots of people standing outside and after looking in the guidebook we discovered that the Burmese travel over the border 3 miles away to sell and buy gold.... and thats all that basically happens in this town. Its a stop off point for travellers and a place to deal gold !!

Mae Sot and Umphang

We headed south from Chaing Mai towards the Burma border. Officially called Myanmar opinion varies on whether to use the name imposed by the current military dictatorship or the old British colonial name. Here people seem to use Burma. For a few days we stayed in Mae Sot the main border town. It's a fascinating part of the country. Many of the people are Burmese who crossed the border ...

10 Life Changing Days

Can a week change your life? If that week, or 10 days for me, was spent in Mae Sot, then it absolutely can. I last wrote about my first day at school. learning to drive a motorbike and just getting chucked into a routine that was not mine. In the last few days I have been far too everything to write: too busy, too amazed, too happy, too sad, too tired and too overwhelmed to do much more than just take it in to process at another time. 10 days in ...

First Day at School

I made it to my first day of school intact. The drive, my first on a motorcycle as driver, went through Mae Sot, out onto the freeway then off into the country side. The area we are in is beautiful in a very gentle way. Rolling mountains meet sugar cane and rice paddies, both just in the tilling stage as the heat of summer is at its peak and the rains are expected any day now. It really is stiflingly hot. Most days the heat feels like a full force furnace when you ...

Yikes!!! Mae Sot!

What a wild few hours in Mae Sot!!!! No such thing as a learning curve here, just a flare of hope shot into the sky and either you grab it and go or you just don't go so.....grab I did. Arrived in Mae Sot on Sunday late - it was just getting dusk as I found Laura and Sharon and reviewed the new digs. No time to catch up on where we all had been the last month ( me, 4 more countries, in one month - I can't even believe it), them, having slowly moved on from Laos ...

Finally to Mae Sot

... to a minibus for the last few hours We bought our tickets together and she took me to a little noodle shop so I could grab breakfast before our 9 am bus. So nice to be with a native speaker - you can expect fewer mystery dishes and usually the price of everything is halved. I learned my new friend was heading home to visit family, her name was Geye, but said it was Eye because most foreigners could not pronounce it correctly...hmmm Cybele/Jasmine ...

Work-day with Partners

Today we split our team again to perform various missions with Partners. The guys returned to the building-project to help Matt for the day. The ladies ordered and delivered lunch to the guys at the construction-site, and even helped putty some walls. Then they ladies traveled to a safe ...

A TASTE OF BURMA IN MAE SOT

... since I was last here, or at least it SEEMS like it has, but that can be misleading. Tang doesn’t like it, but that’s not surprising. She’s Thai and these people are mostly Burmese, even when they’re Shan, a Tai group. Culturally it’s more Burmese than Thai, and they’ve evolved quite separately over the centuries. Since it’s a border town there are the usual border markets, as much a conglomeration ...
