Highland mist
... impressive scenery, although certainly not “grand hills for sheep”. There is a spectacular high narrow mountain dominating the eastern aspect, but it was mainly cloud shrouded today. The walking track goes up the hill from behind the house and over the ridge to Poolewe. That would have been their only way in or out. If they had crossed the lake by boat they would have been a long way from anywhere. Today it is a sealed road, but still no settlements close.

... They think this one was reused for a burial at a much later time, hence its discovery in the graveyard. It is not much to look at, but amazing that it has survived. I also checked out the kelp on the beach. it is very prevalent here and at first I didn’t know what it was because it is very fine compared with most of what I have seen on New Zealand beaches. ... this morning, it vanished and by late afternoon there was quite stormy rain. I was driving back from Gairloch to Poolewe and saw the highlands in a new light; mist and gloom, but still with some appeal. I stopped at the Leckmelm Gardens earlier. From Inverness to Ullapool
... biggest surprises was looking out a window and seeing the gardens below. These stretch from the castle to the sea. Apparently a Duke could arrive in his yacht and land at home. The large structures in the more southerly garden are covered with grape vines, espaliered apples and roses. The little geraniums, that Thelma had grow prolifically. The slope between castle and formal garden has been allowed to grow wild with ferns, wildflowers and some we would call weeds.
