Deustua 342 Puno, Peru
After an 8 hour drive, we had climbed another 600m in altitude to arrive in Puno, on the Southeastern side of Peru. Puno was a town of 180,000 on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the worlds highest navigable lake at 3,900m. Early the next morning our group headed out on the lake to visit two Islands, Tanquille and Amantani, where local people still live in traditional, subsistent ways as they have for a thousand years. We all did homestays with local families on Isla Amantani, which took 4 hours ...
Puno, Peru factWed 23rd April It's amazing that we have been blessed with such good weather. Despite yet another crack of dawn start, the sun is warm and the clouds are clear. First stop en route to Puno is Oropesa, reputedly Peru's bread making capital. Oddly we couldn't buy bread from the bakery itself, but had to stop at one of the roadside sellers on the way out of the village! It was going to be a long drive again in our mini-bus. A cultural stop in Andahuaylillas, site of a famous baroque Jesuit churc...
Puno, Puno, Peru geoffnsteph We arrived by bus into Puno on Sunday evening and settled into our Hotel, Plaza Major. It is a soulless place and seen better days but the room was a good size with a very large bed and plenty of hot water.
Puno itself is not a place to take to your bosom. I did not find it had any charm but Debbie was less critical. It seems to serve only as route in and out of Lake Titicaca so numerous travel agencies fill the streets. It has the usual mandatory Plaza de Armas complete with large chu...
A three hour flight from Panama City (and the weirdest airport of all time that doesn't even have a tourist shop or a coffee bar) took us into Lima, Peru. Initially we were just going to skedaddle down the coast, but Travis discovered while reading the guidebook that October 18th is a holy festival day in Lima and that the center of town would be transformed into a purple mass carrying a floating Mr. Miracles (Jesus). That's actually the direct translation of the day's Spanish name, El Seņo...

... punters were yelling out their destinations as usual. The first guy we went to offered seats at 25 soles each and as we were talking another punter yelled out 15 soles to Puno. We got our seats for 15 soles each, 15 soles for both Jody and Niamh. We were told that the bus had toilets on board for our 6 hour journey, we were quickly ushered onto the bus as it was leaving right away. The bus was in a poor state and I wasn’t impressed, I didn’t think it would make it out ...

Amantañi, Puno, Peru vmallon... more ways than one.. and one that still brings a lump to my throat.

Morning came and we said our goodbyes and took pictures of the family to remember them by. I honestly didn´t want to leave by this point and clutched my dearstalking hat tightly as we waved Aunt Selma, Juan and Alixa their daughter goodbye from the boat. If I were stranded on an island, I´d want these people to be there... I smiled inside, cleared my throat and turned the I-pod on to Gurrumul again. Time to move on...
Amantañi, Puno, Peru alberto66... some nice things for sale and of course we never let a shopping opportunity pass us by.
Then its all aboard the reed boat, getting down was ok I may never get back up though. The wind has really picked up and the lake has gone from a sheet of glass to having a bit of a swell. We get off at the main island where they do the overnight stays, dont think I would fancy that it would be bloody freezing. They have a little ...
