... and the scooter, and were off again.

We found a Pemex gas station just outside of Hermosillo that would let us sleep in the parking area overnight and conked out. The Pemex stop will become the equivalent of the Walmart stop from our travels in the US and Canada. They allow overnight stays for free and it is a safe place, albeit with about the same ambience as a Walmart. Ahhh, there's nothing like the smell of diesel in the morning!

... is the fewest possible interactions with police as possible. Just to be safe, I had my radar detector on alert...and it did its job well. I read that police bribery is a big thing in Mexico, so I used my Russian road trip experience and kept only a few dollars worth of pesos in my wallet, and hid the rest in little stash points. Not a single person I talked to had driven the 100km south to cross the border. When asked, the most common reason was "I don't want to die," (coming in at a close second was "I want to live."). One New Mexican couple even spent an evening brainstorming way to help ...

... entire way. There are miles of unspoiled beach around here. In the right season you can even see some misguided whales taking the scenic route. The fat-bellied mother-flippers still don’t have GPS. All good things must come to an end of course, so I try to put together an onward plan as best I can. First that means to get to Hermosillo, and then decide where to go from there. I call the hotel down the road in Libertad (cell phones ...

        Crossing the Mexican border

... road. Then I notice the huge sign right in front of me that states exactly the same. Oh well.

Nogales is similar to many other border towns: busy, filled with people trying to make money from tourists (some legally, some not). I want to get some Pesos and the HSBC branch looks clean and modern… but all 3 ATM machines are broken. I ask the security guard for the nearest working ATM but his directions will remain ...
