Historical Traveler Reviews of Plaza 500 Hotel Vancouver
Very nice small hotel with great views from the upper floors

I booked two rooms, next to each other for my friends and for my wife and I. We arrived late at night, 11pm and the staff were very helpfull and fine. We had a wonderful view overlooking the city and mountains. Everything, including the airport (take a limosine for only $40 canadian. Start as you mean to go on. Wow) were nearby and easily accessible by No15 bus direct into downtown (10 mins drive) or by taxi. Bus cost $2.25 each way ( £1.00ish)
Breakfast was fine but they thought that it was funny for us brits to have brown sauce on our eggybread rather than sugar and syrup (yuck). In the evening if you are not out then there is allways Bill the bartender to drink with and to chat to. Please tell him that TWEAK is in the dictionary. He will be amused. Didn't believe that the word existed. If you are staying in vancouver for a long period (our stay was for 8 nights) then this hotel is fantastic and to save yourself tons of money on sightseeing go and check out smartvisit vancouver on any website. It saved my friends and I over £200 in entry fees. This hotel is great and you will have a wonderful time here. I didn't bother checking under the bed or mattress for hairs or dirt. Life is far too short. Have a great time in this fantastic city. We did.
Good Value Hotel

Stayed at this hotel in August 2004. Room was great for the price. Located slightly outwith the city centre, but this poses no problem in the summer with the shuttle bus the hotel runs. There is also a small shopping centre located right next to the hotel, which was good. I would reccommend this hotel if you are looking for basic, comfortable and good value accomodation.
Great Hotel, Terrible Terrible Phone Service in Evenings

I have been very pleased with my extended stay here. Reading the other reviews that are negetive are a surprise to me. We have been in two different rooms which were both very clean. I would stay here again in a heart beat. However, there is one irritating problem. In the evenings, I have had incoming callers tell me they had to wait up to an HOUR on hold before someone would answer the call and transfer it to my room. One of these calls was concerning a death in my family and had the caller very upset that she had to deal with a 45 minute wait to talk to me while being charged by her phone company as she was on hold. Tonight it happened again. My caller waited an hour on hold while the hotel recording looped and looped. Then she hung up and called the 1-800 number to try to get through where they tried to put her on hold again. I feel this is very inappropriate for people who have business and need business calls to come through in a timely manner. There needs to be another staff person in the evenings to answer calls. And not the rude lady with dark hair. That is my only concern, otherwise I would recommend this hotel.
Very Disappointed

My husband and I were very excited to have a weekend away for the first time in two years since having our daughters who are two years and four months old. My mom offered to babysit for the weekend. As I am sure many of you can relate to, we were very excited about having a relaxing getaway. I planned our weekend ahead of time and made reservations at the Plaza 500 hotel using expedia. I reserved the bed and breakfast deluxe king bed suite which is the best suite that was available to reserve. It claimed to be quite large, have a king size bed, a view, and sitting area with a mini fridge. A perfect place to store the wine, or so I thought. When we arrived in Vancouver, we checked in and went to our room. It was a very tiny room in an offshoot of the original building. It was only on the third floor right over top of the pub. There were two double beds and no fridge, sitting area or view. I went down to the front desk and told them that this was not the room that I had reserved and paid for. They said that there was nothing they could do as they had overbooked and all of their rooms were full. They then rudely said that Vancouver was all booked up so there was no where else to go anyway. I explained that we had many friends in Vancouver that we could stay with but thought it would be nice to have a relaxing weekend in a nice hotel room. They then said that if I left, they would still charge me a $50 dollar cancellation fee, even though they had not reserved the right room for me. I then asked for some kind of refund on the price between the deluxe room I had paid for and the room I was given. They said that because I booked it through expedia, they would not give me any kind of refund. They acknowledged that it was their error that they had overbooked, but refused to do anything about it. I then resigned myself to staying there and decided to make the best of it because I did not want to waste any more time arguing with the very unhelpful and rude front desk clerks. When I went back to the room, it was very hot, about 80 degrees. I opened the window and then tried to adjust the airconditioning and heater. However, it was broken so I again went down to the front desk. They said they were unable to send a maintenance man up and that there was nothing they could do. So my husband and I got only four hours sleep because the room was so ridiculously hot. Anyway, the rooms are clean on the surface, but don't drop anything between the bed and the headboard because there is at least an inch of dust along with old dirty tissues under there. And the shower curtains smelled quite sour as they had not been washed in a long time. I really enjoyed the sightseeing, shopping, and eating in Vancouver, however, the hotel left a lot to be desired when it came to both cleanliness and friendliness. I would definitely not recommend staying in this hotel. There are too many other nice, friendly, and organized hotels who will not mess up your reservations or refuse to fix broken heaters.
Wonderful!

I have stayed here twice now, once for 4 nights and the second time for one. Both times my stay was pleasant, the room was clean, staff were friendly and accomodating. This hotel has gorgeous views of downtown Vancouver at night and offers a really close (walking) proximity to the Vancouver General Hospital, which is why I was there. The underground parking is gated and you need a code to get in, although this part of town is quite charming it's nice to have that safety. They offered a slight discount (medical rates) and a continental breakfast that included fresh fruit salad, yogourt, pastries and freshly cooked meats, egg and toast or pancake complimentary with the stay. I really enjoyed it, and I must say the counter staff were always great, very accomodating.
Disapointed

All can say about this hotel was that the water pressure was awful and there was hairs on my pillows, stains on the wallpaper and a used condom wrapper in the bedside table........mortifying.
Never agin will I stay there, it was more than a disspointment.
Filthy
from A TripAdvisor Member
Filthiest hotel I've ever seen. We managed to get moved from first room assigned because of the dense air of cigar smoke in the room and the filthy carpets. The second appeared somewhat cleaner until we woke up this morning and found small bugs in the bed. We were then offered a third room over a loud & busy intersection. They appear to pick up dirty room service trays from the hall infrequently uggh. lots of human (?) Hairs under the top mattress at the headboard, ad nauseum. The third room at a piece of trash under the bed, in addition to the noise. It would be very overrated at 2 stars.
Great Value for Moderate Luxury
from FrozenDesert
Completely satisfied and thrilled by the price. Clean and crisp room. There are only about 10-12 rooms per floor if I remember correctly. Our private balcony had an incredible view of downtown and the mountains. We were short on towels and they were brought to our room within 10 minutes. Free parking in under ground garage. We actually walked to downtown which us took about 30 minutes. There is a good Mongolian Grill about 2 blocks from the hotel. The Hotel sits on the southwest corner of 12th and Cambie. Cambie is a major bus route if you wanted to take public transportation. The size of the bathroom was the only disappointment. The vanity had only one sink and minimal counter space. The vanity is located outside the shower and commode room so that did help in getting ready in the morning. I would stay here again.
One of the greatest value mysteries in Vancouver...

I stayed at this hotel after reading the only other review on this site at the time. I agree wholeheartedly with all the comments made. This is an under-rated hotel with rooms which look exactly like in their brochure. Watch out for specials as we had a room for 2 adults and one child and for $79 per night we got a night's stay, a full breakfast for everyone (We paid $60 elsewhere for a simple lunch for us all!) as well as free gated parking.Staff are very friendly and efficient. The hotel is very well maintained. My only observation was that I kept getting someone else's details when trying to access my account using the in-house system. However there was no confusion at checkout and I was charged the correct amount.Top marks and I'm already planning my next visit with the "500" my first choice
4 Star Hotel with 2 Star prices

I spent a much needed week long Christmas vacation in Vancouver,BC.
Having never been there before, I made several calls to various hotels inquiring about their location, prices, and availability. Also afters several hours of surfing the net, I finally decided on the Plaza 500 hotel located on 12th and Cambie. From the moment I walked in, I noticed a very clean, well maintained front check in area with ceramic floor tile. I proceeded back to the lounge area after check in and bought a beer. From there, the bartender, Chloe took me under her wing and and provided me with much needed information about locating what bus to catch, where to go sking and, and what parts of town to avoid.
My room which I paid $59CND a night had a fantastic skyline view of downtown Vancouver, which was only a mile away. The room was as large as a studio aparment, extremely spacious-this building was an apartment complex back when it first opened I was told. I earlier requested a small refrigerator and microwave and it was there waiting for me! My room was spotless and immaculately clean. The only beef I had was they charged .75CND for all local and 1-800 calls which I thought was kinda cheesy. Mark
