Osa Peninsula, Oh So Pretty!

... I spotted a sign for Jagua gift shop with an arrow pointing left. Al and I both love artisan places so we headed there and found the best craft shop I have seen in a long time. Its owned by an American guy and his Costa Rican wife. They are both artists and deal a a lot with the local tribes in the area. The items are all really well made and all come with a little note explaining the tribe who makes the items and how they are made. After spending close on two hours in there we ...

... the ocean and
an outdoor shower and bathroom. Pavones is tiny, everyone is there for
one reason only, the surf break. If you are not surfing you are
watching the surf. The break is left so you surf down and then walk
back up the beach and start over. Eric had a good day surfing but I
think we both spoiled by the perfect surf in Nicaragua.

... they decided that i had no idea where i was going and we decided to turn around cause it was getting dark. We back tracked to this part where we could drag the kayaks over a ridge to the ocean and we surfed to waved with the kayaks! On the way back to return the kayaks we noticed that there were lights in the water and they were photoplanktin. they make light when there is movement so with ever stroke theres thinks lit up the water like stars ...

Corcovado Jungle Trek, day 2/3

... back and forth and up and down the river; and in the surrounding jungle, monkeys were swinging through the trees. We had now seen all four species of monkey found in Corcovado - white-faced capuchin, spider monkey, howler monkey and squirrel monkey. We also caught a brief glimpse of a tapir in some reeds at the water's edge. But even if we hadn't seen a single creature, a near-silent canoe trip up a river in dense jungle is an ...

Costa Rica and the Wild Corcovado

... Peninsula to Carate. Along the way we were greeted by curious spider monkeys and wallowed at the scarlett macaws that flew in pairs above. What they were setting the stage for, we never could have imagined. Once at Carate, an outpost really, it was all on foot from there. We set out along the remote beaches for the entrance to the park. Walking on sand with a heavy pack might I add is not the more pleasurable experiences. I'll take uphill any day. Because the entire 'trail ...

Corcovado National Park and El Remanso

... Carate, where we had the luck of arriving just when a bunch of jeep taxis showed up so we didn´t have to wait for the collectivo (covered truck) at 4 PM. That afternoon we arrived to El Remanso, a luxury lodge in the rainforest overlooking the Pacific. Our deluxe suite was just what we needed after the hard day. Hot shower, huge bed with soft sheets, delicious food, great view. . . now we were really on our honeymoon! The next day we slept in until 7 and took ...

... some other travelers I met. The ranger station said there's no openings until Sat. Totally booked. After doing some research I found out that there's an indigenous family that I can stay with and follow their daily living routine. My book says getting there is half the fun. I get to go horse back for 2 hours and during the rainy season its really adventurous (thats the season right now). I wasn´t able to go there until Thursday so I figured out the bus schedule to get to Drake´s Bay.

The Whole Rest of the Trip

... Herpetologist" that I had been given at La Selva because I caught a frog. From corcovado we hiked out another 20 k, about half of which was beach walking, then took a "taxi" (pickup trucks with seats in the back) to a town, then took a boat across the Gulfo Dulce (saw flying fish and a sea turtle) then finally took a bus to las cruces, which, compared to corcovado, is a 6 star hotel. Those stars are: pillows, electricity, internet, couches ...

The Jungle Book

... eyes. The thicket around me shook, and I had the sudden feeling that I was alone in a scene from Jungle Book. You know, the part where the man-eating tiger comes roaring out of the bush to devour the little brown native innocently gathering nuts and beans. But it was just the others coming back from their romp in the wilderness in search of exotic wildlife. So we stretched out our legs, strapped on our packs, and headed out, pushing further into the heart of Corcovado.
