A Surprise Visit

... rum and playing in the water (not so sure about that combination, but...) The water was cool but not cold, perfectly clear, and a beautiful blue-green color. We were told that Scuba divers had been unable to find the bottom of the pool. It's not that wide across, but apparently it's just a straight shot down to who-knows-where.

Some of the locals were jumping from the high cliffs, and that is something that Shen just can't resist. Fancy-Pants on the Cheap

... t think it existed here! I wouldn't go so far as to call it delicious, but we had some good mangú (a strange casserole of platanos and corn, maybe? I don't really know...) and rice with a few beans thrown in.

In the evening we strolled around Rio San Juan, another small but chaotic town. The people here have been super friendly, and the natural beauty is remarkable, but I can't say I like the towns we ...

Happy Easter!

... Brigada Verde meeting that was very inspirational. I hope to plan a couple of charlas in celebration of Earth Day, April 22, 2009. Finally, I'm waiting on approval for grant money for the stove projects, but when that happens, I'll be in a new direction there too. Okay, I promise to write more later, but I just wanted to give you all a taste of what's going on in Samana. Sincerely, Jennifer

First trip to the beach - Samaná Peninsula

... all sensitive to motion sickness. We saw a pair of whales spout & dive several times, so that was neat. Saturday night was so much fun for me because we found some live music at a bar that was playing merengue and bachata. I got to do a lot of dancing, including one song with the ensemble's lead singer...who was highly impressed by my bachata skills. Not so cool were the several pairings of old ...

The countdown begins

... anual ¨Girls empowerment camp¨. At the end, we all gathered around the bonfire and one of my Los Limones girls cried as she sang a song she wrote just for me about friendship. I was so very touched, as were my fellow volunteers. We even got the mayor of Pimentel to sponser my girls, giving over 100 dollars to the cause! It´s also helpful that she´s a woman in a high government position. The T-shirts of this years´ camp: A woman embracing the planet earth with ...

Relaxing on the Atlantic Coast

... painted and sold his work across the street from where I was staying. He reminded me a lot of some Hispanics I know in the states who go through hell to migrate towards more money and opportunity - racism, poverty and a yearning for home all plaguing him as he struggled to earn a living. I'm not a fan of drinking rum straight-up, but it seemed proper as he reeled off a symphony of trials and tribulations for me, though he also laughed plenty ...

La Terrenas - Cuba Libres, Flip Flops And Sunnies

... back to the hotel with Goatgirl. I think it is time we left! It is all rather funny really. Another day in the Caribbean, another day at the beach. Life is tough here amongst the coconut palms. The beach here in La Terrenas has small wooden bar buildings on its edge brightly painted and serving cold drinks. We stop for a Presidente Grande as the sun sets chewing the fat over travelling life. I am flying home in less than two weeks now. Goatgirl has plans in the future to ...

The Final Stretch of Training

... Based Training. We´re (the Youth Development Group is in Nagua), Health is in Carbrera, Economic Development is somewhere near Santo Domingo (Dios les bendiga) and Water/ Sanitation is in some tiny rural town which has about 20 homes in the entire city. Our little sector has been quite busy in our NGO internships and other technical meetings. My internship is with an NGO called La fundacion Maximo Gomez. Apparently it has been around for over 50 years and is quite ...

In the Midst of the Christmas Season

... for the beach and walked by so many places that were just crowed beyond their capacity. I was walking between my group and some other groups because I like hanging with different people. When the New Year rolled along there were so many fireworks going off it was unbelievable. I cannot explain the feeling of being on the beach watching the lights and just feeling the cool breeze brush along my face, but it was another piece of heaven for me. I was not did not want ...
