South Africa! its seemed to take ages to arrive there and yet looking back now it all seemed to happen in a flash. We crossed into SA at the Orange River border crossing with Namibia. Things at the roadside were definitely changing now. It started to feel not so much like the Africa we'd been used to but thats not to say we weren't enjoying it still. The first rule we had to get used to was no more peeing at the side of the road. We had to use a toilet - some people really struggled with this...

... and socks before i get there and I'm knackered. But I was shopping down on the Victoria and Albert Docks which is a rather interesting place to be doing it.
Tomorrow I'm going down the cape perninsular to see the Penguins if the weather holds out, then in the evening I'm meeting my tour group for the big overland adventure!

... of a nation state. When you ask the common man on the street where he is from he doesn't give you his tribe, as they do in Kenya. The inhumanities of Apartheid seem to have destroyed tribal culture, thereby uniting the black majority. After dropping me off at the Waterfront, Alex drove to the town center to get rid of our rental car. I paid 180 rand at the Mandela Gateway to hop on a ferry to Robben Island. The tour was very well-organized, almost in an ...
Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa muratcanI have just returned from a few days in the Cederburg Mountains which is a wilderness area 240 kilometres North of Cape Town on the way to Namibia. It is an area I have always wanted to visit as it is renowned for the rock art left by the San people. So equipped with hire car - more of this later - I set of on the 21/2 hour drive to the small town of Clanwilliam where I had booked a stay at the Bloomenberg Guest House. The drive was easy and uneventful ...

After the tour we went back to the hostel and we all decided to do the abseil down Table Mountain. Although the mountain itself is over 1000 meters above sea level, the abseil only goes 120 meters. It's still the highest commercial abseil in the world. Sweet! I called up and managed to get a travel agent ...

The days went something like this: 5.30 am wake up call (beating drums outside your tent followed by a tray of tea/coffee/hot chocolate delivered to you) 6am - 9am morning safari drive (half way through you stop for more tea at a water hole as the sun comes up) 9am - 9.30am walking safari (we got to walk with rhinos one day... they're really blind so you can get up real close!) 9.30am breakfast (fruits and cereals followed by a fried ...

Cape Town, South Africa basa1126... will offer to lend you his car, and when you ask for the keys, he points out that the door's not locked, and the keys are in the ignition. But the people were very friendly, our accommodation was nice, there were a couple very touristy cafes, and we whiled the time away. First day we couldn't bike at all; we don't have clothing to keep hands and feet warm at 5C and raining. Second day we risked a ride down Trudeau Pass ...
Cape Town, South Africa imapilot... we really had arrived for lunch. She then explained what all of the food was laid out on tables for us near the entrance to the dining room, and before taking our drink orders. We went up by tables and enjoyed one of the greatest feasts I've ever had. Mom's Christmas dinner still wins, but this comes pretty darn close. We had savory rice, regular rice, maize and potato casserole, pumpkin, sweet potato, ostrich stroganoff, spicy beef, fried chicken, meatballs ...
