... 3.5 km long cemented road with more than 3200 steps ( total 3600 steps up to temple ) Entered main Jain temple and sat by the side of Mahendra Jain who was already sitting there praying God Adinath by reciting holy book Mantras. He said that he would come back only after main prayer in the temple by about 10 am. I ...

Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India sushilojha... girls (even bigger weaklings), we were pretty much powerless against the river even in its calmer moments, and when we were actually in the rapids we were thrown around like rag dolls. Saved on occasion by our almighty guide (super human strength), we were happy just to chill and hope our boat didn't tip over. The rapids weren't exactly terrifying, but given the strength and experience of our team that was probably a good thing. A fun day, if not the thrill fest I'd imagined it ...
Rishikesh, India lnb203... and came over and chased the cow away! I quickly said 'thank you' and ran up the hill to the safety of my room. One evening I realized that the diet had made me anti-social (I had rented a gas burner and ate all my rice in my room, either alone or with Lindsey, although I did occasionaly convince another student to join me for a meal of brown rice...they usually left unsatisfied, as most people would with a dinner of ONLY rice!) so I decided to venture out with my ...
Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India courtenayWe have completed our 10 day Vipassana meditation course. This was done in Dehra Dun. The town was totally uninspiring with the usual chaos and noise. Thankfully the site for the meditation was about a half hour drive from the town. It was at a higher altitude and the scenery got more mountainous and the air felt cleaner as the driver made his way past some beautiful homes, through a military base, and then onto a dirt ...
Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India kalsi_kaur... the crowds, Rishikesh town sits along the quickly rising banks of the hillsides above the Ganga's alternately sandy and boulder strewn beaches and cliffs. In the busiest areas of town, large steps (ghats) lead to the Ganges. This is a city in love and at play with Mother Ganga. Old and poor women sit at the ghats, selling tiny leaf bowl arrangements of flowers, incense and burning camphor lamps to offer into the Ganga with your prayers. Young and old come and ...

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India schettino72... top of a ridiculous 500 rs/ night which I'm paying for because at the moment I don't have any other options. She is very blunt and speaks her mind. She's somewhat negative about things and argued that Americans are very backwards in their thought. She argued about money with me, saying that surely I can afford to pay $10 a night, but I've only been paying about $2.50 everywhere else so there's no way I want to waste money on this fancy guesthouse. I actually would ...
Dehradun, India adomingo4... grind as visible from the bus window: street vending; sorting through trash; hanging out in the metal shop, tire shop, or ministore; welding; and peddling heavy supplies around that normally would be carried by a truck on a bike; bathing. Once we got out of the city, the scenery changed a little bit to include lots of huge dung piles, sugarcane presses, piles of freshly made bricks, smokestacks (for making bricks or processing ...
