... is a stunning place to visit at Christmas and well worth a visit. It's a little gem of a city hidden in the mountains with some beautiful places to visit. In December there are five different Christmas markets in Innsbruck and the atmosphere is really something else! There are many little stalls that sell the most delicious Glüwein in beautiful mugs which you can take away as a souvenir for just €2.50. They also sell Kiachle which is a doughnut-like cake and ...

... down the road I turned right to go down the even steeper Umbrail pass and soon ended up in the lower and slightly warmer regions. This area is very spectacular; the Alps change over into the Dolomites which replace the Alpine slopes with rugged rocky terrain. Day 286 4 hrs, 4.4 kms I do stop in a fairly large city on the way. I do want to get a better feel for this unique Italian-Austrian region. It feels strange to get off a train and immediately find myself in a town--almost feels like I'm cheating or something! It also feels strange to walk block after block, and the city just continues and continues... I've gotten used to villages that take 10 to 15 minutes to cross. Finally ...

... of the lake, popular with mountain bikers. I notice a couple of them stare right at me as they pass, which seems a bit odd--people don't usually stare at each other in this part of the world. Then I realize it's because they're wearing helmet cameras, and I guess they want to get a good view of this odd character hiking down a mountain carrying a guitar! I've now entered the commune of Mals. The first village of this ...

Day 285 5 hrs, 8 kms Day Totals: 16 hrs, 29.6 kms Technically I'm in Italy, but as my friend in Flies reminded me, this region is historically and culturally part of Austria. Even now it has some autonomy, with it's own transportation system and education system (German first, then Italian) All the towns have both German and Italian names. The whole area still has a pretty Austrian "feel" to it. My first town Curon Venosta, is actually a ...
