... alpine meadw into the forest. Mud was again a common obstacle but we managed to keep our feet dry today. The way down was formed by a small water course which was very very steep and rocky. It made for slow going for a while. Come to think of it, almost all day the track was clay, and quite slippery. We then followed the Cascade de Fouillet, a watercourse which was a gorge with very fast flowing water and some very impressive waterfalls. Due to lack of access they ...

... and persevering. We still managed to put on a good turn of speed until the trail, to our consternation, turned upwards again. However, we continued undaunted and reached our gite outside the hamlet of Aunac at about 4 PM. We had a shower and did some washing and are now looking forward to some dinner as you can probably imagine! Stats: Distance: 26.8 km Total ascent: 1088 meters Total descent: 857 meters Kathy and ...

It looked very small from 800 meters up! The trail which had looked so smooth and easy from our gite window the day before turned out to be nasty and treacherous. It forced it's way through wild azalea bushes and brackenferns. It was very easy to put your foot ...

... the area until 1953. By the time we reached them the sun had begun to burn away the clouds and the situation of the buildings reminded us of Macchu Pizzu in the Andes mountains. We looked around a bit and then continued descending. At one spot using an old railway track that went down at a very steep angle. We waited for the train to take us down into town for a bit, but as there had not been a train since 1920 or ...

... Shortly afterwards we found a small dry knoll and stopped to have some chocolate and a drink. Moving on we finally reached the pass and hoped for a good view downwards. However, there was still a large ice-sheet blocking our views into the valley. Rounding this along a rocky track we finally had our first views of Lac Etang d'Araign. It looks like a natural lake which has been enlarged by a concrete dam. The refuge lies a bit above the lake, but we needed to descend about ...
