... We also passed through numerous tunnels throughout the day (following similar experiences through the last couple of days also). The sheer effort and technology required to build these as well as the impressive roads through these mountains is simply amazing (and must have cost an amazing amount of money). Tunnels have been simply gouged pr bored straight through the base of selected mountains- some tunnels are less than 200m long with most approx 300-400 long. We ...

... This was the kick at the end of the day because it was slightly up hill and when you are at the end of a long day it is really tough, physically and psychologically. 162km, 2550m of ascent.
But here we are, fed, watered and having had a bit of nap. Time to scout out a restaurant. The brasserie Cafe de la Paix gets good review. Then I need as much sleep as I can get. Tomorrow will be a tough one that includes the Tormalet - the giant of the Pyrenees.

We had a surprisingly good dinner last night considering the isolated position of the gite. Most of it (except the chicken) came from their own vegetable and flower garden. The plate of salad had about 5 different flowers mixed with the vegetables, and they were all edible. This was followed by a chicken casserole which was delicious, and the desert was artfully folded pancakes with coconut icecream in the centre. A young Israely couple and their toddler daughter shared the ...

... leveled out a bit. We found ourselves along a waterchannel which was concrete walled and very fast flowing. (We are sitting here writing this outside on a timber trestle table outside the kitchen of our gite. The most French songs are playing on a CD player and the cook and his wife are singing along lustily). Anyway, back to the waterchannel! We followed the bank of this for some time, until the track ...

... I wish the bloody thing would go away"! We now found ourselves crossing some patches of woodland and decided we would have lunch sitting on a log which had fallen across the track. (It is a regular occurence in forested areas to have to negotiate fallen trees, it is rare to see any sort of track maintenance). We had bought 2 picnics that morning, which the French call a pique nique, and shared one of them. As rain was threatening we ...
