Travelled from Georgetown to Hat Yai by minibus, a 7 hour non event tip. Hat Yai is a point of connection for travellers who wish to access other parts of Thailand. It is also a very popular holiday destination for Malaysian tourists. We were only staying the night with connection the following morning to Phuket. So we returned back and arranged our airport car for 11am tomorrow morning. We fly at 2.20pm, and just managed to book our hotel tonight before the wifi magically got turned off at 10pm.. awkward. ... was a kind of performance. After all, this is their livelihood, and this kind of ‘emotional labour’ was at least partly linked to simply needing to sell things to foreign tourists. Where does the person end and the performance begin? Here in Hat Yai, you get 100% person, whether you like it or not.

Eventually, we found some sticky rice with vegetable skewers, and returned to our accommodation. As we tucked into our food, it felt sad to be leaving Thailand ...
