... castle was occupied by the Japanese military during the war and was consequently bombed to smithereens by the Americans. It was rebuilt in the 1990s, and an amazing job they did too. Naha itself suffered a similar fate, hence it consists of concrete houses and high rise flats. And beautiful beaches. After the castle we hit the main shopping streets. ... Lots of shops and quite reasonably priced. It seemed like the street went on forever and took a few hours to walk the length of it. They had a street parade which started at 12 pm, with Japanese dancers, firecrackers and pole jugglers. The city centre was very crowded now and was starting to get extremely hot, so we decided to walk back to the ship.
