      ... unique experience that cannot be seen anywhere else in the United States! The Locks consist of two canals and four locks that allow vessels of many types/sizes to safely traverse the 21-foot drop in elevation of the St. Mary’s River between Lake Superior and Lakes Michigan and Huron. From viewing decks, you can watch "Lakers" and "Salties" (ocean-going vessels) as they travel the seaway between ports and navigate the rise/drop of the water levels.

      ... crossed onto St. Mary's Island and from there to Whitefish Island, a First Nations territory recently regained by the Batchewana First Nation of Ojibways through very long struggles for their native land claims. The trail on the island was a gorgeous walk, terminating at the rapids of the St. Mary River, just to the left of the International Bridge linking Canada and the U.S.

      Lovely dinner with a couple from Maren Ohio, who we'd also had lunch with. They served us champagne in the bubble car and at dinner, ( probably trying to make up for the 5 hours we are behind. It's hard to tell who to believe about the time now. ...
