End of the affair

The problem with suddenly being transported from a world of crummy buses, squat toilets and boiling hot rooms, in which the concept of 'furniture' is a mosquito net with ten or more cigarette-sized holes burned in it (the better to provide access for the mosquitoes), to a world of full-on five star bliss is that you'd rather not be transported back, thank you very much. Unfortunately tomorrow morning we have to leave the island paradise of the Pimalai Resort (and Spa) on Koh Lanta to return t...

Part I: Pre-Wedding

(I noticed that the piccies are totally out of order, so sorry! I was having that blonde moment again! Well, at least I learned something! Will be sure to get these piccies into order. Soon.) PART 1 I never really thought I'd get married. I've seen alot of marriages fail. I've seen people hurt and scarred and basically lose their faith in the idea of lasting love. It's a hard thing to witness but surely a *********e to experience. I always thought "what does a piece of paper mean anyway?. Wh...

... she was a mess. A huge storm blew in and perhaps more accurately described as a cyclone. The power went out as it usually does on the island at the slightest hint of bad weather! So no air conditioning, no light and wild winds! The 41 degree temperature was difficult to contain. At one good moment though (when Nurofen for kids had had some effect) we played shadow puppets with our torches in the middle of the night. I stupidly thought that she was on the mend and so handed over the ...

... amount of life at these sites. Lanta diver were an excellent dive shop and our DM Gabby was lovely. This island does not have Phi Phi's breathtaking beauty but it has beaches varying from long and white to small and prettily dotted with rocks. They are also frequented by locals and a sunset walk is made more special when one sees local families playing in the sea. Add a scooter and you have a recipe for pottering, exploring and relaxing ...

... fact that the government keeps screwing around the visa status. John is a Brit who came to Thailand the year Janice did and he stayed long term on this island, fishing and attempting to write a book and just chill out from a busy life in London. He returned again this year, back to the same island, fishing every day and planning to stay for a few months. It was nice to meet him and hang out with a semilocal. The three of us went out on the resort ...

Milli says: We are still on the beach and becoming masters in the art of Nothing. Its quite exciting to get up, paddle, laze for a while, eat some breakfast/lunch, laze some more, read, swim, eat, drink, laze, eat, drink...you get the idea. The place we are staying is so fantastic, and really has a great group of people that make it really enjoyable. We weren't sure about when Steve was coming - all we knew is that he was coming at some point with his friend. He ended up missing the ...

... they weren't gonna eat me I followed them and they disappeared. Lucy had swum out by then and we tried to find them again but just saw small ones. That night we watched two different fire shows on the beach, the second of which we were pretty much the only people there so chatted to the Thai guys doing it and go to know the music they liked. Job 2 Do, check it out! Next day we went diving at Bida Nok and Maya Bay by Koh Phi Phi Leh where they filmed The ...

... Ko Tao and Ko Lanta to make us want to rush back. The country is marketed as "the land of smiles" well we met a fair amount of people working in the tourism and hospitality sectors that if they smiled they'd crack their faces. We did meet some nice people and overall we did enjoy Thailand but I just got the feeling that certain places, like the islands had become spoilt by overtourism and this was reflected in the locals attitude.

These were the easy parts though as we had to do the dives early the next day. We got up the next morning and it was... raining again, that's a surprise. We weren't fully sure we'd actually go out the rain was so bad until we got down to the dive shop and they said no problem weather somehow doesn't matter when your diving. We went out on the rough ...

Phuket-Koh Lanta
