Finally in Nepal

So in Dhaka airport I actually slept OK on my inflatable mattress complete with sarong for a sheet and my fleece inside my stuffsack for a pillow. I kept waking up with the loud announcements but it wasn't too bad. My flight was supposed to leave at 9.30am but for some reason they told me it would now be at 2.40pm so I had a lot of time to kill. I got a free breakfast at the 'Spices' resaurant in the transit area which seems to be where the airline staff eat for free too. It wasn't bad, just ...

Kathmandu: temples, momos, and strikes...

Kathmandu is always worth an extra effort to reach. But this time we had a long and uncomfortable
bus ride from Kakarvitta on the easternmost border of Nepal with West Bengal in India, more or less 610 kilometers,or 17 hours in a local bus.Hard wooden seats and a driver who speeded away like he was participating in Formula 1 race, overtaking everything that was blocking his way, were were both very scared, but the local passengers seem to enjoy it, laughing and clapping the hands.Estimated ...

The Kingdom bowed before the Himalayas

... finally settle down with finest whispers.

Irene, Ms Choo and I arrived late in Kathmandu, Nepal at 8.00pm. All we could see was, luggage strewn all over the receiving area, and there were no conveyor belts and trolleys in the airport. We had to climb over other luggage, sorting and searching for our luggage. Kind of messy, but what can we say, this is one of the poorest country in the world. With a population of 28 million, equivalent to Malaysia’s population ...

... Introduction

In 1951, the Nepalese monarch ended the century-old system of rule by hereditary premiers and instituted a cabinet system of government. Reforms in 1990 established a multiparty democracy within the framework of a constitutional monarchy. An insurgency led by Maoist extremists broke out in 1996. The ensuing ten-year civil war between insurgents and government forces witnessed the dissolution of the cabinet and ...

Pre-trek preparations in Kathmandu.

... plenty you never thought of too. Restaurants, bars, trekking shops, hippy shops, Tibetan shops and music shops! It's a riot of smells too - yummy food, incense, rotting rubbish, smoke and pollution all mixed up as one. At night the bars pump out the music and the taxi horns honk away too. Good fun!

Soon we were packing up and preparing for the trek whilst trying to fight off the colds we were carrying from Bangladesh.

... quite convincing so I went along with it. To be perfectly honest I would never have seen half the sights if I had ignored him so he was worth the fee I eventually paid him, which was less than £6 for more than 2 hours. However, I drew the line when he told me he was a qualified massage therapist and would be happy to ease my aches and pains from trekking!!

I bade him farewell and retreated to my room. Eventually I decided I should venture ...

... regular price. I stayed at the Student Guest House the first night as I got in after dark and had to find something. It was good but it has no windows so I left the next day. I really like light.

Now I'm at the not so cheap but very bright and comfortable Tibetan Guest House until Monday morning when I go off to Chitwan. I don't like paying $9 a night for a hotel room but really, that is not that expensive. I'm just used to prices outside of Thamel.

Stone stairway to heaven

... I felt ready for the morgue. Nothing I had done on any previous trek had been so difficult as that. I reflected darkly as I lay on the hard bed in our lodge that I had been five years younger on the last trek, although it only seemed like yesterday. If my mood was foul, it was nothing when placed alongside Michelle's. This had confirmed her worst fear; namely that I had dragged her on an endurance test of stamina and strength, only for her to be laughed at by amused ...
